David Hayter: “Kojima-San was always pretty subdued whenever we met”

Voice actor/writer/director David Hayter has answered questions from the Reddit community regarding his upcoming movie projects, the main differences in the voice acting of Solid Snake and Big Boss, his time spent working on the MGS franchise and his initial reaction when he landed the role in the series.

During an AMA (“Ask Me Anything”) session on Reddit today, a user asked Hayter about his “favourite moments” when he met with Metal Gear Solid creator and director Hideo Kojima in a meeting, with the American screenwriter describing the Japanese developer as “pretty subdued.”

“Kojima-San was always pretty subdued whenever we met,” he said. “But he did seem excited about showing me the upcoming technology for whatever game we were working on at the time.”

Of course, the topic of Metal Gear Solid and Hideo Kojima meant people asked once again if he would be involved in the next title, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and Hayter dismissed rumours by saying “don’t get your hopes up.”

Hayter explained how he felt when he received news that he had landed the role of Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid — a role he defined and is remembered for by fans — and described it as a moment that “I’ll never forget it.”

“I auditioned for the job, and a few days later, I got a call from my very dear friend Jennifer Hale, who said, “Guess who’s going to make some money?” And I said, “Is it me!?”

“I was sitting outside on the patio, as the Counting Crows were recording their third album, “This Desert Life” at the time. I’ll never forget it.”

One of the more interesting questions was submitted by Reddit user DarkTemplar26, who asked Hayter if the voice acting for Solid/Old Snake was any different from Naked Snake (Big Boss), or “were they basically just the same person in a different time?”

“Solid/Old [Snake] was a guy who was under government control and manipulation from the time of his birth,” Hayter explained. “He carried a lot more baggage and conflict from the beginning. Naked Snake, particularly in Snake Eater, was in the prime of his powers, and ready to conquer the world at the beginning of that game. It was only over time that he realized how f’ed his situation would be.”

Outside of the Metal Gear Solid-related questions Hayter responded to a user asking him whether he’d be a voice in Fallout 4, Half-Life 3, Elder Scrolls VI or Grand Theft Auto VI, with a poised response coming from the former voice of Snake: “All they need to do is ask.”
