With the news that ‘Assassin’s Creed Unity’ is officially delayed, we all sit waiting for an extra few weeks for the next installment of a great series. Like many games before it, delays are always possible for various reasons. [Disclaimer: Assassin’s Creed fans please withhold your torches and stones, I have a point!] With the disclaimer out of the way, let’s begin. Truthfully I’m glad it is delayed, and this is due to one major reason; I want a true next-gen game! Understandably, the delay is only giving the development team (Ubisoft) another month to fine tune details such as AI tweaks, environment adjustments and any last minute bugs. I will go out on a limb here and say what some might consider blasphemy….Delay it until it’s a true next-gen experience!
Unity has already been identified as a next-gen game only (Xbox 360/PS3 get their own installment ‘Assassin’s Creed Rogue’). Tony Key, Ubisoft senior vice president of sales and marketing, explained during E3 this year that the game from foundation up is for a next-gen experience only. According to Mr. Key the older generation consoles cannot run the game, as it has too much for them to handle. The overhaul in the game mechanics are a pleasant opportunity to finally have the experience that captivates the gamer completely. The departure or ‘tweak’ to the dreaded ‘automatic fail if you’re detected’ missions, is just a little adjustment Ubisoft has made to the very successful series.
Moreover, what might make Unity the true next-gen experience is the reported support for crowds of 30,000 people. This is apparently going to occur seamlessly while the gamer is traveling through the area inspired by the French blemish in history. In addition, the AI are reportedly more engaging and have a true “real” factor. My worries now begin with this portion of the game. In past installments the AI have been amazing, but at times have a memory of a 5 year old in a toy store [Whoa look over here!…*seconds later*…. Whoa look over here!]. For me this is where tweaks can make this game flawless. To have an AI that is engaged in the world and reacts like a normal person, that is what we need for next-gen games. Honestly, if you watched your co-worker (fellow soldier; in the game) get stabbed in the chest by a hooded man (or woman!) who fell from the sky, would you be inclined to stab at random bushes until a brief amount of time passes? In actuality, everyone would be on high alert and would be more observant and less complacent. This real factor would subsequently make a game where it really makes a player think twice before carelessly assassinating AI.
I know this only a minimal idea, but we all know the game will look good. Don’t get the idea misconstrued, I love Ubisoft’s work with the Assassin’s Creed series. I cannot even express the overall joy I have had with this series (Black Flag was/is MY JAM!). All I ask is for a game to finally deliver on the promise of next-gen. Until that is achieved, I believe the delay should be longer. ‘Assassin Creed’s Unity’ might be the game the industry has been promising since the launch of the next-gen consoles. Only time will tell what is true.
