Windows 8 and 8.1 users will be able to effortlessly install the Microsoft Windows 9 operating system immediately after downloading it from Microsoft, which is actually quite similar to how Apple has been releasing their OS X updates for Macs.

At the time of this writing, it is unknown whether or not Windows users who are on older (or different) iterations of Windows OS will receive any special promotion or offers.

Furthermore, the retail prices for Windows 9 have not been unveiled. However, Microsoft is supposedly making a push towards shifting people from older, unsupported Windows operating systems, such as Windows XP. With that in mind, offering Windows 9 as a free or at a discounted price is sure to be a fairly effective marketing move.

In related news, Microsoft is expected to reveal their follow-up to Windows 8, Windows 9, alongside an in-depth technical preview.

Leaks regarding Windows 9 have showcased a variety of features that are to be included with the OS, such as Cortana, the resurrection of the Start menu, a notification center, as well as a host of other user interface improvements.

What are your thoughts on Microsoft’s decision to offer Windows 9 as a free upgrade to current Windows 8 users? Is it a smart one? Why or why not? If you are on an older version of Windows OS, what sort of promotions or discounts would you like to see Microsoft offer?
