Video games are a waste of time, Burbank says

A couple of days ago on October 5th, 2014, a radio and podcast personality for CBS by the name of Luke Burbank released a video for a CBS Sunday Morning segment.

In the aforementioned video, Burbank mocks, insults, and attacks gamers and video games on a variety of levels, initially stating that “video games are a notorious time-waster.

Furthermore, he expresses his disbelief at Amazon’s 1-billion dollar acquisition of immensely popular game livestreaming platform, Twitch, saying:

Why exactly would someone want to watch someone else waste their time?

That’s not all, Burbank says much more than that. See the video in question and read more details after the break.

In the above video segment, in a flagrant showing of ignorance, Burbank goes so far as to compare viewing Twitch livestreams to watching other people scroll through their Facebook news feed.

Burbank additionally states that watching eSports “recreates the trauma of his childhood,” which is based on the fact that he presumably always watched his friends and family play video games, rather than play them himself.

The worst part of the video is probably Burbank’s closing argument, in which he surmises that gamers do not understand how the real world works, saying that life is “the most interesting game any of us will ever play.

He states the following in regards to video games:

…in the real world…you can’t just move people with your super-strength, or jump over things if they’re in your way.”

A very interesting detail worth pointing out is that a branch of the company Burbank works for, CBS Interactive, owns prominent video games website, GameSpot, and was partnered with MLG (Major League Gaming) and Twitch around two years ago.

The deal has since expired, however it begs the following question to be asked:

Why is an employee of the same company that owns GameSpot and supports eSports leading an ignorant, sarcastic, and ultimately, baseless, attack on video games and those who are passionate about playing them?”

What are your thoughts on Burbank’s video? What video games would you recommend for him to play?
