Ed Boon Discusses the Influence of eSports on the Development of Mortal Kombat X

Ed Boon, co-creator of the Mortal Kombat franchise, has revealed some of the important factors that his team will take into consideration when they develop a new title.

During an interview in the latest issue of Game Informer (via Mortal Kombat subreddit), Boon explained that the growing influence that eSports is having in the gaming community is “always on our agenda.”

“With the last few games — MK9, Injustice, and X — we’ve flown in people, really great players from various fighting game communities, and get them hammering on the game early enough that we can make changes to address some of the issues they find,” he said.

NetherRealm Studios’ highly anticipated Mortal Kombat X will introduce a game-changing mechanic in the form of ‘character variations’ — which, by the way, allows players to select one of three different play styles before a match — with Boon saying this feature will tie in with eSports and offer more depth for the customisation people can make towards their favourite fighters.

“I’ve never understood why some fighting games make these really complex inputs, immediately eliminating 80 percent of the audience,” he added. “At the same time, the tournament scene and eSports have this much higher class and sophistication and player level as far as how much time they’re willing to devote to it. You’ve really got to provide them something deep and multi-layered. I think our variations are going to provide that, redefining a matchup between two characters.”

Injustice: Gods Among Us, NetherRealm Studios’ 2013 title based on the heroes and villains from the DC universe, had a companion app released to support the game, and Boon said it was more successful “than any of us had ever dreamed,” while suggesting it would be “foolish to ignore” the possibility of one being created for Mortal Kombat X.

Running at 1080p and 60fps, Mortal Kombat X will launch on April 14th, 2015 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
