Mobile developer Complex Games has added another installment to Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 franchise with The Horus Heresy: Drop Assault. Releasing worldwide last week on Thursday, January 15th, the game is a strategy title set during the Horus Heresy, a period of time in the franchise’s fictional universe where the galaxy was besieged by traitorous super soldiers of humanity’s post-human defenders, the Space Marines. Although it has officially launched on iOS devices, the game’s developer promises that an Android version will be released soon.
Boasted to apparently be the first videogame to place the Warhammer 40,000 in this setting, The Horus Heresy: Drop Assault takes place on Isstvan III, the third planet in a distant system where the Horus Heresy was realized. 10,000 years before the franchise’s namesake, players have to choose between the Loyalists and the Traitors in this galactic civil war. The Loyalists are those who still remain loyal to the franchise’s fictional god-like leader, simply known as the Emperor of Mankind, whereas the Traitors are those who (in the eyes of the Loyalists) have turned their back on the Emperor to follow a new leader: Horus, the once revered Warmaster of the Imperium and trusted son of the Emperor.
Regardless of whichever side is chosen, players will be able to build and customise bases and armies to break the stronghold of their enemy through “intense tactical warfare.” Like how it can be done with the table-top or roleplaying hobby, there will also be an option for players to create their own space marine Chapters (or more accurately Legions, as per the game’s place in the Warhammer 40,000 timeline). Players will be able to fly their own colors with friends and rivals as they engage in an online multiplayer Skirmish gamemode.
“The guys at Complex have been working long and hard to make a fantastic game from this most infamous of conflicts from the Horus Heresy era and it shows. It’s compelling, fun and captures the desperate trials of the Isstvan III campaign wonderfully, and you get to field Glaive tanks and Reaver Titans! What’s not to like?” said the head of Games Workshop Licensing, Jon Gillard.
The Horus Heresy: Drop Assault is a free game to download that features in-app purchases. Published by CROOZ, the game is 92.1MB in size, and requires iOS 7.0 and above. The game is also compatible with iPhones, iPads, iPod Touches, although it is optimized for iPhone 5. You can find the game over on the App Store.
