Type-Moon will release Fate/Extra Record worldwide for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on January 28, 2027. The date was announced during State of Play and detailed in an official PlayStation Blog article.
This is a complete rebuild of Fate/Extra, the PSP RPG first released in Japan in July 2010. Type-Moon says the new version expands the story, renews the character graphics and updates the presentation while replacing the original battle design with a strategic, deck-building Command Card system.
A return to SE.RA.PH
The story takes place in SE.RA.PH, a digital world created by the Moon Cell Automaton. A Holy Grail War brings together 128 Masters, each competing for victory with a Servant. The player controls a Master who has no memory of how they entered the conflict.
Discovering an opposing Servant’s identity is part of the strategy because a Servant’s True Name is connected to their combat style and weakness. Before reaching a Decisive Battle, players explore sections of the Arena and collect information. The final confrontation is a one-on-one fight between two Servants directed by their Masters, with the losing Master forfeiting both the tournament and their life.
Players will choose one of three Servants as their partner. Each has distinct abilities and strengths, so deck construction and tactical choices will vary with that selection.
How Command Card Battles work
Fate/Extra Record overhauls combat around customizable decks. Commands are divided into three categories: Attack cards deal damage, Guard cards build a shield to reduce incoming damage, and Skill cards provide their own specialized effects.
The available Commands differ between Servants. New cards can be found in Arena treasure boxes or earned by defeating powerful enemies, giving players additional options for adjusting a deck as the campaign progresses.
The PlayStation Blog presents this system as one of the remake’s defining changes rather than a cosmetic update to the PSP mechanics. Together with the expanded story and renewed presentation, it is the clearest indication of how broadly Type-Moon is rebuilding the original.
Standard and Digital Deluxe editions
Standard digital editions are planned for both PS5 and PS4. A Digital Deluxe Edition will include the digital game, cosmetic costumes, an arranged in-game music pack based on the original Fate/Extra, and digital versions of the art book and soundtrack included with the physical Limited Edition.
The announcement does not list every physical Limited Edition item or describe separate pre-order bonuses, so buyers should check the relevant PlayStation Store listing before purchasing.
