Xbox Series X|S players are getting an early look at content planned for the Wreck Runners September Update through a free Xbox Insider playtest. The test runs from September 4 through September 9 and does not require participants to own the game.

According to the official Xbox Wire announcement, the unreleased build introduces Temples, Runner color customization, Paranormal Progression, Trustwell Lost Salvage, a new underwater enemy, and other changes. Players can enter with as many as three friends, giving crews an opportunity to explore the update’s additions before the full September Update arrives.

Temples and new progression choices lead the update preview

Temples are described by Xbox Wire as an entirely new type of location that crews can explore and salvage. Their inclusion expands the kinds of locations available during the playtest.

The build also contains Paranormal Progression, a system that creates new choices as crews advance through a run.

Trustwell Lost Salvage provides another reason to move beyond familiar areas by rewarding exploration. Alongside that feature, crews will encounter a dangerous new underwater enemy hunting beneath the surface.

Other additions include Runner color customization, new hazards, and interface improvements. Xbox Wire indicated that the development build contains further changes beyond those named features.

Crews can bring up to three friends

The playtest supports the player and up to three friends, allowing a crew of as many as four people to climb aboard the ORCA and test the unreleased build together. Participation is free and open to everyone on Xbox Series X|S, with no ownership requirement for Wreck Runners.

That removes the game-purchase barrier for the test period, although access still requires the Xbox Insider Hub and registration through the designated preview.

The build also adds support for 15 languages: Arabic, German, Latin American Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Kazakh, Korean, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Ukrainian, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese.

Playtest schedule and how to join

The Wreck Runners playtest begins Friday, September 4 at 10:00 AM PT, or 17:00 UTC. It ends Wednesday, September 9 at 10:00 AM PT, also 17:00 UTC. Players therefore have a limited window in which to register, install the separate playtest build, and explore its content.

To join, players must sign in on an Xbox Series X|S console and launch the Xbox Insider Hub. Anyone who does not already have the app can install it through the Xbox Store. Inside the hub, the next step is to navigate to Previews > Wreck Runners and select Join.

After registration finishes, participants will be directed to the Store, where they can install Wreck Runners Playtest. The ordered registration process means selecting the preview alone is not the final step; players must wait for registration to complete and then install the dedicated build.

The test build may differ from the finished update

Xbox Wire cautioned that this is an unreleased development build. Participants may encounter bugs, and content included in the playtest could change before the September Update launches.

The September Update was still taking shape when the announcement was published on September 4. As a result, the playtest provides an early view of planned content rather than a definitive record of everything that will appear in the finished update.

The clearest additions currently confirmed are the new Temples, Runner customization, underwater threat, Paranormal Progression, Trustwell Lost Salvage, hazards, interface improvements, and expanded language support.
