Blizzard released the Overwatch 2 Season 5 midseason patch on November 3, opening the Taking Reign event and closing the season’s Reign of Talon arc with the biggest balance pass since the season launched. The update buffs several tanks, dials back the new support Doctrine, and expands the tools Blizzard uses to catch players who deliberately sabotage matches. The full change list is posted in Blizzard’s official patch notes, which went up ahead of the patch itself so players could prepare before the update landed.
The Taking Reign event and a packed schedule
Taking Reign runs from November 3 through December 7. Players complete matches and challenges to earn exclusive event rewards, and they can upgrade the track for premium items that include a legendary Doomfist skin and the Vendetta mythic weapon.
The event sits inside a full midseason schedule. The Excavation Initiative returns across the same window (November 3 to December 7), handing out Loot Boxes for logging in and winning a game over multiple weeks, with Base, Epic, and Legendary boxes as the top prizes.
Junkrat’s Loot Hunt returns from November 19 to 23 with Double XP attached this time. Progress does not reset between matches, and the challenges stay flexible so players can go all in or pace themselves. The OWCS World Finals Cheer Rally follows from November 24 to December 7, with bonus Cheers for watching OWCS World Finals broadcasts on official channels between December 2 and 6.
Anti-sabotage detection and a thank-you loop
Blizzard improved its gameplay sabotage detection in this patch, and it says the updated systems have already led to action against many players. Sabotage examples include consistently and intentionally failing to contribute to team fights, repeatedly jumping off the map, and intentionally blocking team progress.
Reporting a player who gets punished now triggers a “Thank You” message in the in-game Notification Hub. That closes a long-standing gap where a report produced no visible confirmation anything happened, which discouraged players from reporting at all.
Tanks get survivability, plus two targeted nerfs
Blizzard buffed the tanks whose win rates or engagement tools had fallen behind.
Junker Queen gains 50 base health, up to 425 from 375, and 50 more in 6v6, up to 500 from 450. Carnage’s cooldown shrinks to 7 seconds, down from 9. Blizzard’s note says her lower health pool limited her ability to engage when she could not land Wounds and trigger their healing, so the extra health and the faster Carnage give her more chances to stay in a fight.
Mauga gains 25 base armor (125 to 150), and his Incendiary Chainguns’ burning damage over time rises from 15 to 20. The developer comment says his win rate had fallen below acceptable bounds after earlier changes. Ramattra’s Void Accelerator ammo climbs from 100 to 125, extending the pressure he can apply at range outside Nemesis Form.
The buffs are balanced by smaller trims to the season’s strongest tanks. D.Mon’s Power Barrier now recovers more slowly (0.2 to 0.3 seconds) and carries a 0.25-second minimum deploy time, her Propulsors lose their 15 impact damage entirely, and Overstrike’s lifesteal drops from 150% to 125%. Winston’s Revitalizing Barrier perk heals 30 per second instead of 35.
Damage heroes move in opposite directions
Reaper’s base health rises from 275 to 300 after hitbox and projectile-size changes reduced his effectiveness. Genji’s Deflect duration drops from 2 to 1.5 seconds, which Blizzard says puts more weight on timing and limits the ability’s defensive uptime.
Anran’s Zhuque Fans damage rises from 22 to 24, but Inferno Rush loses its knockback and can no longer hit the same target more than once per use. Vendetta’s Palatine Fang swings slower (initial swing delay 0.15 to 0.2 seconds, overhead leap 11 to 9.5), and Whirlwind Dash’s Raging Storm knockback halves from 8 to 4.
Echo’s Aerial Munitions minor perk now refills her ammo on use. Emre’s Cyber Frag detonation time drops from 0.6 to 0.5 seconds, and Blizzard added a rotation option to his default reticle settings. Hanzo’s Sonic Disruption perk no longer overrides Sombra’s hacked health packs. Shion’s Execution starting spread drops from 8.5 to 5.7 degrees, and Satsuriku Spree’s time between volleys drops from 0.6 to 0.5 seconds.
Doctrine drops, Brigitte and Illari rise
Doctrine, the support added when Season 5 launched in October, receives the patch’s most substantial nerf. Eternal Scepter’s primary fire recovery time rises from 0.6 to 0.65 seconds, its Infused damage drops from 90 to 80, and Infused healing drops from 120 to 110. Shrouded Momentum’s cooldown rises from 8 to 10 seconds, and Infuse’s from 8 to 9.
Blizzard’s reasoning is that Doctrine’s healing output stayed high relative to the utility he also provides. The patch cuts his raw numbers and burst and leaves the utility alone. The developers first outlined Doctrine’s kit alongside the Sombra and Roadhog reworks at BlizzCon 2026, and this update is the first balance pass to touch those numbers.
Brigitte’s Inspire internal cooldown drops from 1.25 to 1 second and its instant healing rises from 12 to 15, so she heals more often during sustained engagements. Illari’s Solar Rifle reaches maximum charge in 0.575 seconds instead of 0.65, and her Healing Pylon heals 50 per projectile instead of 40.
Sombra gets three adjustments. Hotfix’s duration drops from 12 to 10 seconds, Cyberspace’s weaken effect falls from 50% to 40%, and EMP now overrides enemy hack effects on health packs. Ana’s Biotic Grenade explosion damage falls from 90 to 60, and Blizzard separated the grenade’s damage from its self-healing so the change cuts her burst while keeping the healing.
Baptiste’s Regenerative Burst gains a UI element that tracks allies in range. Jetpack Cat’s base health drops from 225 to 200, while Frenetic Flight’s acceleration rises to 28 meters per second and its fuel regeneration falls to 20% per second.
Stadium balance and bug fixes
The patch also tunes the Stadium mode’s power selection. Winston’s Tesla Field damage falls to 30 per second from 40, while Genji’s Wyrm’s Maw Swift Strike damage per stack rises to 15% from 10%. Sojourn’s Hard Stuck penalty shrinks to 10% reduced damage from 25%, and Vendetta’s Apex Bloodlust lifesteal drops to 3% from 4%.
Bug fixes cover Wrecking Ball’s Grappling Claw retract controls, which could greatly increase his rolling speed, and a spot where Mizuki could get stuck in the payload on Circuit Royale. Blizzard also removed the recurring Eichenwalde sightline and fixed a stuck point on Watchpoint: Gibraltar.
