With the recent explode in sales from Microsoft’s version of Minecraft that outsold 12 million copies both digital and retail this month, the folks over at PlayStation are looking to cash  in on some of  those tempting numbers. Eurogamer and other various sources were able to confirm that the update on Sony’s actions for bringing Mojang’s Minecraft to the accessible Playstation platforms were also meant to tease the box art for both the upcoming PS4 and PS Vita versions of the game. We’ve previously written about when we could expect the PS4 version of Minecraft to hit, but at the moment Mojang and PlayStation have been retaining their silence on promising an official release date. But some new information is better then none, and the unveiling of the box art is one step closer to expecting the next-gen console being granted access to the open world sandbox game.

Since PlayStation 3 has allowed primary access to downloads of Minecraft on the PSN, Sony estimated that numbers are maintaining a steady flow at around 1.5 million. Their official EU blog reassures that the number is bound to increase in the coming months, and the release of the physical copy is going to boost Mojang’s sales on the console. Not that Minecraft needs an alternative reason to become even more popular, but it seems like all platforms are beginning to humor the idea of bringing the renowned game to the masses. Whether it’s a hard copy of the game, or a digital download that you can maintain; chances are that you’ll be able to seek out and choose the appropriate platform (and purchasing method) that’s suited to your personal needs.

PlayStation App users were emailed earlier this morning with an advertisement for the impending release, which was listed to arrive on May 14. The console developers at 4J Studios have managed to compile their development for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. So chance’s are that all shaded updates will be revealed in time, we’ll keep you updated on the future developments of both next-gen console releases and the eventual physical release that’ll entice both old and new players of Minecraft to venture into the unknown in-game worlds that await them.
