Game Console Future Irrelevancy

Console wars usually last for many years, and we’re just at the very beginning of the new generation of consoles, the PS4 and the Xbox One. However, there’s no doubt which of the two is dominating sales world-wide. Sony’s PS4 is still selling like there’s no tomorrow. The latest reports show that the Playstation 4 has been bought by over 7 million consumers on a global scale, as of the 6th of April 2014. This shows that the console is still keeping its rapid selling pace, as the sale numbers showed 6 million units sold at the beginning of March.

Microsoft hasn’t revealed sales data as of yet, as it is probably still taking advantage of the Titanfall Xbox One Bundle and the resulting boom in sales it has caused. Still, estimations show that the Xbox One has been bought by around 4.5-5 million users to date. It’s hard to tell until we get official data from Microsoft, but it’s clear that the Xbox One is trotting behind the PS4, at least for now. Sony’s PS4 has also sold 20.5 million pieces of software when combining retail sales and PSN sales. That’s an average of 3 games per console, give or take, and that’s not bad, given the fact that the library of the PS4 is still rather limited. Expect these numbers to keep growing after the release of inFamous: Second Son and the upcoming releases of Elder Scrolls Online on the PS4 and Xbox One and the early-summer release of The Last of Us: Remastered Edition.

“The response from the global gaming community for PS4 has been overwhelming and we are truly humbled that gamers are selecting PS4 as their next generation console of choice. The PS4 journey has just begun, and although we are still facing difficulties keeping up with the strong demand worldwide, we remain steadfast in our commitment to meet the needs of our customers, and surpassing the wildest expectations of gamers by delivering new user experiences that inspire and engage. We look forward to unveiling many of these experiences to our fans in the coming months.” said Andrew House, Sony Computer Entertainment’s acting president.

Sony Social Media head Sid Shuman also made a few statements: “On behalf of the entire global team at PlayStation, I want to thank you for your unprecedented support and for making PS4 your next-generation console of choice. We couldn’t have done this without you! And please keep the feedback coming: we are listening. On that note, we’ll have some great new details to share with you regarding our upcoming PS4 system software update very soon. Stay tuned!”

These reveals mean that Sony will be releasing significant updates for the PS4 very soon, following Microsoft’s successful batch of recent updates to the Xbox One, updates that greatly improved the console’s functionality. What exactly is in store remains a mystery, but we’re eager to see what Sony has in store for PS4 fans.
