Different people have different hobbies. Some like to fish, while others like watching movies or getting hammered in a various shady establishments that serve cheap beverages. But what happens when you love GTA 5 and Metal Gear Solid equally, and have some time to kill? Well, you recreate the original Metal Gear Solid: Phantom Pain trailer using GTA 5, of course. Wasn’t that obvious? It was definitely an obvious idea for the 27 contributors that spent some considerable time remaking Phantom Pain’s E3 trailer by using in-game footage from GTA 5. It took massive amounts of work, and while the result obviously can’t be perfect, it’s a damn impressive one nevertheless. In case you missed the original, 9 minute long Metal Gear Solid: Phantom Pain trailer, here’s the original:

And now that your memory has been refreshed, here’s the same trailer, made entirely using GTA 5 scenes and recordings:
There’s some things worth mentioning, and some better left unsaid. In the latter category, we could mention the fact that horses have suddenly grown engines and wheels, or the fact that Snake seems to have turned into one ugly alien, to name a few. These are obviously due to the limitations of GTA 5, and the team had to work with what was at their disposal. It’s also interesting to see just how much visual fidelity has evolved between the previous generation of consoles and the new one, for which Metal Gear Solid: Phantom Pain is being developed.
The prequel to Phantom Pain, MGS: Ground Zeroes was recently released, and was well-received, despite featuring an extremely short campaing. Phantom Pain is expected to land sometime next year, bringing all the features so meticulously revealed in, erm, both trailers. As far as GTA 5 is concerned, if you haven’t had a chance to try it out yet, you should. If you’re a PC gamer, know that the GTA 5 PC is expected to be released sometime this summer, so you can at least get your Metal Gear Solid-ish fix through that.
What did you think of the recreated trailer?
