Minecraft’s PC version sells over 15 million copies

How does one celebrate an incredible achievement? Some people pop a bottle of champagne, others go for an exotic vacation. Minecraft creator Notch however isn’t that eccentric. He’s ok with having a Red Bull and photographing his thumb. That’s fairly modest, considering that Minecraft has just surpassed 15 million copies sold on the PC. That’s no achievement to be shy about in any case. And that’s not all! At the same time, the Xbox 360 version of Minecraft sold more than 12 million copies. The PS3 version isn’t doing bad either, the game selling 1 million copies in the launch month (back in December 2013). That number is estimated to have passed 3 million by now. Add to that the total 21 million copies of Minecraft: Pocket Edition sold for Android and iOS mobile devices, and we’re talking top profits for Mojang and Notch.

Will Minecraft manage to reach 100 million copies sold over all platforms? That’s a huge goal to aim for, but it’s not entirely out of reach either. Considering that Minecraft is being developed for even more platforms, it’s certainly a possibility. Right now, fans of the game are anticipating the Minecraft Xbox One and Minecraft PS4 versions, which, based on current hype levels, will most likely be extremely successful too. We’re not sure when these editions will see the light of day, but we know for a fact 4J Studios is working on porting the game for current-gen consoles and is expected to release the new versions sometime this year.

In the meantime, Minecraft is enjoying its Title Update 14 content, and there are many features planed for the building sandbox game. There seem to be no limitations to Minecraft’s potential, and we’re anxious to see more, as the game makes gaming history!
