Tomodachi Life has certainly been getting a lot of attention the past few days, but for all of the wrong reasons. The game was highly anticipated by many 3DS owners, often being called “Animal Crossing meets The Sims.” Within the game players can live an exciting and whimsical life with their Mii. This was very exciting until it was revealed the same-sex marriage could not occur within the game. Now the game has caused major controversy and debates have sparked throughout the fanbase.
Many fans have said Nintendo has every right to leave out the feature of same-sex marriage if they like. Others have complained and argued for equality, stating that gays should have the ability to marry in the game if they please. Of course what most people don’t understand is that the game has already been released in Japan, and such a major change cannot be made through localization.

Nintendo released an official statement today apologizing that same-sex marriage is absent from the game and that future installments would include same-sex marriage. The statement reads:
“We apologize for disappointing many people by failing to include same-sex relationships in Tomodachi Life. Unfortunately, it is not possible for us to change this game’s design, and such a significant development change can’t be accomplished with a post-ship patch. At Nintendo, dedication has always meant going beyond the games to promote a sense of community, and to share a spirit of fun and joy. We are committed to advancing our longtime company values of fun and entertainment for everyone. We pledge that if we create a next installment in the Tomodachi series, we will strive to design a game-play experience from the ground up that is more inclusive, and better represents all players.”
What are your thoughts on the situation? Personally I believe Nintendo shouldn’t have to apologize and people are simply blowing a small issue way out or proportion. Let us know in the comments if Nintendo was right or wrong to leave same-sex marriage out of Tomodachi Life.
