Wolfenstein: The New Order recently released for multiple platforms, and next gen buyers will be happy to know that the game achieves 1080p and 60fps on both the Xbox One and the PS4. Machine Games, the developer of The New Order stated that the game achieves this through a game engine that was built to scale. Speaking to TechRadar, senior gameplay designer Andreas Ojefors said that developing for next gen was actually easier than developing for previous consoles. He said:
“There was a much bigger difference in making a game for both PS3 and Xbox 360 back in the day than what it is now,” he said.
The new platforms are much, much more similar to work with than what we’re used to. So it is less of a challenge this time than it has been before.”
The id Tech 5 engine is what we can thank for The New Order looking so good on both consoles, as it is what manages the scaling across both consoles. Few games so far have achieved 1080p and 60fps as exclusive titles, let alone multiplatform, however this game shows us that it’s definitely possible. With time, more games can hopefully achieve this and we can hopefully expect it of big games like Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. Ojefors goes on about how the technology worked to create this performance:
“It’s about creating an engine that is from the very bottom up built to scale. I think from the beginning when we got our hands on id Tech, we realised it was an engine that was built to scale very well between different platforms.
And it’s been an ongoing effort both among the engineers here at Machine games but also with a great deal of help from id’s software to make sure it’s an engine that continues to scale on the next generation of platforms.”
Wolfenstein: The New Order is out now for Xbox One, PS4, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
