Writers Opinion: Top 10 Hoenn Pokemon that deserve Mega-Evolutions

So with that in mind and to celebrate the upcoming remakes, here’s my top 10 Hoenn Pokemon that deserve mega-evolutions (in this writers opinion). I tried to make this list about Pokemon that could do with mega-evolutions. While I do explain my reasons but there are some already strong Pokemon on this list because looking back at the Pokemon that got mega’s in gen 6, Blaziken and Gardevoir were already strong before they got them but regardless let’s get started.

10: Relicanth

Remember back in gen 3, there were puzzles you had to solve to fight each of the three Regi Pokemon. Well in other to open one of the doors which had the clues written in Braille by the way (cheap move Game Freak), you needed to a Wailord as your first Pokemon and our number 10 Relicanth as your last.

Because of this chances are you had a Relicanth at one point and quickly got rid of it afterwards because it only had a high defence and HP going for it. Maybe it’s due to its boring design or because it had no evolution to improve on it but Relicanth always only felt useful for its part in that stupid puzzle.

As for design, due to the fact that it’s a prehistoric Pokemon they could have its mega look like anything really like say a prehistoric shark for example. One thing about Relicanth is that if it gets a mega, its only decent ability is Swift Swim so it could possible be placed in a Rain Dance team and be useful this time.

Relicanth however lands on number 10 because the other 9 on this list are just more likely to get mega’s as their more used and popular.

9: Slaking

No matter how good a trainer you are and no matter how much grinding you did before this battle, the fight against your father for the fifth gym badge is still one of the hardest gym battles in the series and we can all blame his damn Slaking or Slaking’s in Ruby and Sapphire.

You see the reason for this is because Slaking is that it has the highest stat total of any non-legendary Pokemon in the series, no wonder they gave it Truant as an ability yet despite this a mega evolution would still be great. This would also help deal with the fact that gen 6 hasn’t been nice to Slaking’s move pool, getting rid of the three elemental punches for example.

The fact that it’s your father’s (in the original version anyway) favourite Pokemon does increase its chances of a mega evolution although to keep it even remotely balanced they would need to keep its ability as Truant although there are ways around it.
For it’s design I would like to see it work kind of like Tyranitar mega in that it could have parts inspired from Vigoroth and Slakoth. Despite this Tyranitar is number 9 because while it’s not as useless as Relicanth, its stupid strong as it is and Truant isn’t that hard to get around anyway.

8: Torkoal

Gen 3 wasn’t kind to the fire type, only adding three evolution lines and sadly for four number 8 Blaziken overshadowed all of them. Poor Torkoal, not only did it have to content with Blaziken but also Team Magma’s pet mascot Camerupt whose practically guaranteed to get a Mega.

The problem with Torkoal is that it’s only good stat happens to be defence and it’s mono fire type. Add this to it being the slowest Pokemon from gen 3 and you have a Pokemon that is screwed against Pokemon with a good Special Attack stat. Also for its Mega design I can’t be the only person thinking that its back could have a volcano on it and maybe its skin could become more rock like to compensate for its. This could also give it a type change to Fire/Rock to further increase its defence.

For its mega I think it’s ability of White Smoke should stay as its fits with the idea of Torkoal feeding on coal, also it prevents any stat drops. The mega-evolution would increase its defence and special attack because fire-type and with the boost to psychical defence it would make a great wall that could also take down commonly used walls like Ferronthorn and Mega Aggron.

7: Wailord

In the same way that Torkoal was overshadowed by Blaziken, at number seven we have the often forgotten because Sharpedo and Milotic came out at the same time, regardless here’s my number 7 Wailord.

Wailord (the creatively named whale Pokemon) is unique in that its one of only two Pokemon till gen 5 who could learn Water Spout which is the strongest water type move in the game.

Unfortunately Wailord’s only good stat is HP so it can’t take advantage of this though if your curious you can take advantage of its high HP and Rest to make an annoying stalls, though water types like Tentacruel and Jellicent make better stalls.

Beside increasing its already ridiculous HP stats, Wailord could really do with an increase to either its special or psychical attack stat. This would be a bit more of a bulky attacker like common Arcanine builds though it will most like get a boost to defence making it an improved version of what we already have hence the number 7 spot.

6: Breloom

Wait don’t skip to number 5 just yet because I understand why Breloom won’t be a popular choice. I mean all you have to do is play Pokemon online for an hour and you’ll understand people s problem with Breloom, damn Spore.

Yet here’s the thing, besides being used for spamming spore, people tend to ignore it which is a shame because it has a high Attack Stat and for a stage 2 Pokemon it has good stats all round.

Going by what it’s design could be maybe the seeds on its tail could bloom into flowers with a shade of purple in them to reflect on the seeds poison. Its fists could grow bigger as well due to the Pokemon’s use of punching moves as shown in the anime and its move pool. It’s legs could also grow bigger because to reflect on the fact that Breloom’s design resembles kangaroos, maybe even a little pouch though that would be a bit of a stretch.

Stats and typing wise, Breloom should stay at Grass/Fighting for its typing because along with being a unique type, it suits Breloom’s stats greatly. The Stat boost that it would get when it Mega-evolves should go into Attack and Speed as well. As for its ability I feel that it should stay as Effect Spore and Game Freak don’t give it Prankster please. That ability is so annoying. Prankster by the way gives priority to status effect moves for anyone who doesn’t know.

5: Swellow

Ever since Swellow was introduced it’s always been the odd one out, it had no third evolution for a start and it has pretty bad stats. Unlike Pidgeot who at least has nostalgia and more rounded stats (Swellow only beats it in speed and barely in attack), Swellow always feels like its missing something and that’s where the mega would come it.

For Mega Swellow I can imagine it becoming a Flying/Fighting type which as Hawlucha prove is quite a versatile type. This would take advantage of Swellow’s Attack and Speed stats as well as finally giving it access to Close Combat.

Also and this is only a small point but Game Freak please, let Swellow learn Brave Bird naturally, having to breed into a bird Pokemon an attack which is basically it ramming itself at speed into another Pokemon just feels weird.

4: Milotic

Ah Milotic, often looked at as Gyarados complete opposite, it’s the beauty queen of the Hoenn region and reason for tons of creepy Pokemon fan-art. Serious don’t look it up.

Welcome back, hope you “enjoyed” the fan-art but lets continue. Like you’d expect from the complete opposite of Gyarados Milotic is a special wall with a nearly as strong special attack stat and like any good mega-evolution it would improve on these areas.

Due to the way Milotic looks, I think its Mega design should move it more towards looking like a Dragon, maybe a Chinese dragon which would make more sense due to its current design. Partly due to it’s design and because it’s called the Tender Pokemon I would like to see Milotic become a Fairy/Water type. I mean the Fairy type could always do with more Pokemoon right.

Like Slaking at number 10 Milotic is held back on this list due to the fact that it’s already a good Pokemon and one of the better Water special walls.

3: Mightyena

Originally when it was revealed that Houndoom and Manectric where given mega forms for gen 6 I really wanted one for Mightyena. As you may have gathered from this list I feel that mega-evolutions should for the most part be used to improve Pokemon that while good just need that extra something to make them better.

In Mightyena case it means making him more viable in battle because as he stands now his just too frail and Mightyena’s speed stat while good (it’s actually as high as Metagross) isn’t fast enough to overcome its fragility. It’s Mega design could also reflect this by giving him bigger fangs or a thicker coat maybe.

Along with increasing its attack and speed stats, to improve its sweeping abilities (sweeping by the way is knocking out a Pokemon team using the same Pokemon), it’s ability should be changed to Moxie which increases its attack stat every time its knocks out a Pokemon. Moxie as it stands is its hidden ability so it’s not out-of-the-way to change it to its Mega’s ability.

2: Flygon

Out of the three dragon types released in gen 3, Flygon was unique in the sake that it was the only one that wasn’t Dragon/Flying instead going for an interesting at the time Dragon/Ground. Unlike most Dragon types while Flygon stats were made for sweeping, there not in the extremes of the more common ones like Salamence for example.

Speaking of Flygon’s typing, much like Mewtwo and Charizard X I would love to see Flygon become a Dragon/Bug type. Flygon already resembles insects with those lens over its eyes and it’s pre-evolution Vibrana looks like a dragonfly. On top of that the dragon typing would help cover for bugs fire weakness and bug type could give it access to new moves.

A mega evolution could help Flygon become that sweeper that people look for in Dragon types and I feel that a good ability switch for Flygon could be Sand Stream. It makes sense since that is where I would imagine finding them, if they could be found in the wild. On top of that Sand Stream would help it fit in more teams as a lot of teams could do it a good Sand Stream and sometimes you just want to use sometime besides Tyranitar.

And this is the reason Flygon’s loses out on the number 1 spot. It’s already a decent Pokemon and while it’s not necessary, Mega-Flygon would still be great, the number  1 spot goes to the one Pokemon that seems to have been forgotten the most.

1: Tropius

For the most part gen 3 had a pretty usable rooster of Pokemon yet for every Gardevoir and Breloom, we also get Beautiflies and our number 2 Pokemon Tropius. Tropius as it stands Tropius is a unique looking Grass/Flying and it has very good abilities like Chlorophyll which increases its speed in the sun and Solar Powered which works like a life orb in the sun.

Unfortunately that’s all it has as Tropius is not a Pokemon made for battling because with its current stats, all it could do is work as a wall till you take into account that it’s weak to nearly all the common attack types.

And this is the reason I think Mega-Tropius would work as Tropius has a good move pool and you can breed them to learn the ever popular Dragon Dance but it just needs that little extra to give it a change. Oh and Tropius’s design is already great as it is so imagine what a mega would look like and on the plus side it’s not likely that it would get spikes… hopefully?

So that my list of the Top 10 Pokemon that deserve Mega-Evolutions but these are just my opinions and there were a lot of Pokemon that didn’t make it onto the list “cough” Metagross “cough”, so in the comments tell us what Pokemon you’d like to see get mega’s. Also what’s your opinion on the Mega Pokemon revealed so far. Personally I love all there designs so far but that’s just me.
