Nintendo pull back their deficit after impressive response to their E3 showing.

A recent survey has done much to re-enforce the idea that Nintendo ‘won’ E3. The survey, which was carried out by IHS in partnership with Gamer Network, showed Nintendo’s strong showing at the expo and how they had piqued gamer interested in the Wii U.

The graph clearly shows a rise in interest in the Wii U after E3Around 1000 ‘core’ gamers were surveyed about their intent in purchasing any of the three ‘next gen’ consoles. As you might expect, the PS4 holds the lead with the Xbox One and the Wii U languishing somewhat behind. Despite this, undoubtedly the most notable thing about the graph is the 50% increase in post E3 purchase intent for the Wii U. This increase now means that the Wii U has out stripped the Xbox One in this category. As well as this the PS4 actually lost purchase intent numbers after the pivotal trade show and it was the only console to do so. Consumers were obviously unimpressed by Sony’s showing at E3 and this reflects in the graph, with a small percentage deciding that purchasing a PS4 was not the way to go. This data just goes to show the critical nature of E3, clearly the perception of each company’s showing has a massive effect on the consumer and can dictate whether a console is a major success or not.

In addition to this data, it was also revealed that 86% of Wii U owners intend to purchase the upcoming Zelda title for the console. This suggests that Nintendo’s success is almost certainly riding on the back of this hotly anticipated addition to the long running series. It also seems that Nintendo cannot get away from the idea that they rely on a few big, first party games to shift units. The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario and more recently the Smash Bros. series are all relied upon heavily to sell consoles. It seems that these statistics infer that nothing has changed in that regard.
