Voltage Inc. has been publishing several applications and mobile games known as the Romance Sims series that contain irresistible animated men who will court their viewers who simply need to touch the screen to answer questions or make decisions. Although this previous statement doesn’t sound alarming or news-worthy, their romantic products have received over 22 million downloads worldwide. Despite their growing success, these products function more like a motion book than a video game as the digital contents are actually divided into event chapters.
In Kissed by the Baddest Bidder, this Voltage game–that follows a love story about a young woman being bought from a secret auction–enables all players to access only the prologue and first chapter. The prologue basically introduces the main character’s first meetings with each potential bachelor, providing first impressions to the protagonist who will later select one candidate’s love story. Despite making this difficult decision the first time, anyone can replay the prologue and the first chapter for each candidate multiple times. Besides the replay value, the entire package only functions by repeatedly tapping.
Basically, the player must continuously tap on the screen or choice panels in order to read and see future events based entirely on the player’s chosen decisions. However, interested users must then purchase each chapter separately if they wish to find out more about these men and eventually hear their confessions as seen in this opening movie.
Although this particular title is one out of numerous entries, does this innovative setup actually qualify more as a game or a book?
