Comedy legend Robin Williams, who was found dead in his California home on August 11th after an apparent suicide, may be immortalised in popular MMORPG World of Warcraft.
A petition to have a NPC named after him on Change.org has reached a whopping 10,975 signatures. Of course having an overwhelming petition doesn’t mean anything will actually get done but fans of both the game and the acting/comedy legend needn’t lose hope. When asked on Twitter if he had seen the petition, Technical Game Designer Chad Nervigg responded by saying ‘Yes. We’re taking care of it’.
Williams was notorious for being an avid gamer, even starring in a Nintendo commercial alongside his daughter Zelda. According to the petition, the Academy Award winner was also a big WoW player. He used to jokingly describe himself as a WoW addict but apparently took his characters very seriously. The petition even claims to know the specific server Williams’ characters are on. On top of this he was reportedly a enthusiastic PC builder, just another of many things that endeared Robin Williams to the gaming community.
Robin Williams’ untimely and tragic suicide at only 63 years of age has undoubtedly shaken much of the western world. Several generations can fondly look back on his performances in Aladdin, Mrs Doubtfire and Good Morning Vietnam and this age spanning body of work is crucial to the tragedy felt after his death. A World of Warcraft NPC seems a fitting tribute to the legendary man and we can all only hope that Blizzard will comply with the wishes of the near 11,000 people who have signed the petition.
