Hello Games’ No Man’s Sky has been one of the most-anticipated titles of 2015 ever since it was first unveiled at VGX last year. Praised for its unique art design and concept, No Man Sky is promising a one of kind space exploration game where no one will have the same experience because of its procedurally generated world.
Today, during its Gamescom 2014 presentation, Hello Game’s Founder, Sean Murray, addressed some of the criticism received by who he’s referring to as “the guy in the comments” where he goes against the claim of the infinite universe in No Man’s Sky. Even though Murray says he hates this person for claiming these things, he admits that he’s right and that nothing on a computer can be infinite.
Using a 32 bit number to generate the game’s universe, No Man’s Sky is able to generate billions of planets from that seed in a chain reaction. Having this in mind, Murray says that repetition may occur after playing the game for 4000 to 5000 years. That is, if you explore a planet every second of the day. He also said that, if they would eventually use a 64 bit number, it would take 4 to 5 billion years to see any form of repetition. According to him, “We will all be dead; our sun would not work” by the time this occurs. Take that “guy in the comments.”
Despite not knowing when the game will actually launch, No Man’s Sky will hit the Playstation 4 sometime in 2015 followed by a PC version later in the year. That is, if the report from IGN regarding an announcement in next month’s issue of Edge Magazine is actually true. We’ll keep you updated if any new details regarding the game emerge within the coming months.
In the meantime, you can check out the gameplay trailer that was released for E3 for No Man’s Sky.
