The PS4 is on a successful tear of sales in its first year. It has been edging out the competition with the Xbox One and is making some of the right decisions. Which is why it’s no surprise that the PS4 has now sold over 10 million copies.
Gamesindustry.biz caught up with SCE Jim Ryan and asked him about the current success of the PS4. Ryan was “pleased” with the PS4’s performance and “puts good heart into the future” for the PS4. We’d say so. If you’re the leading console within a year of release, it has to say something about the quality of the content being produced. Ryan also went on to say that it’s “much easier to make decisions from a place of relative success”, which allows them to worry about what is being produced and not how to get their system out there and active. Sony is confident in the potential plans they’re going to produce and PS4 users are excited to see those plans go into effect.
Ryan was also swayed by EA Access and it’s ability to lure out the Xbox One. He said that “it’s not right for our platform” at the current time and he wouldn’t be “in or out forever”. We could be seeing EA Access come to the PS4, but not anytime soon. If you’re in a position of power such as Sony has, you have to consider the downsides of EA Access. Although there are cheaper games and it really does make a difference in the gaming industry, Sony has asked how it will affect its model. The PS4 is going to be something else entirely and we’ll have to see where it goes from there.
Unfortunately, we do see console wars. In the comments on GamerHeadlines or anywhere, you’ll see devoted Microsoft and Sony fans listing why their console is better than the other. Now, I am a PS4 user, but that’s my personal decision. I wanted the content that the PS4 was producing over the Xbox One. Although the Xbox One had a great gamescom conference, I’m still excited to see what will come out for the system of my choice. Also, If you’re a PC user, the console wars mean nothing and you enjoy all the Steam sales constantly anyways. If you like a certain system, go ahead and play it, but you don’t need to justify which is better. All of the above are going to have good games to play on their respective systems.
