This year’s upcoming Assassin’s Creed offerings, Assassin’s Creed: Unity and Assassin’s Creed Rogue, will not have the standard competitive multiplayer experience found in previous AC games. The multiplayer mode in question was first introduced in 2010’s Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood to widespread approval, and has been a staple of each entry into the series until this year. The main multiplayer mode pitted players against each other in a harrowing game of cat-and-mouse, tasking gamers to stay concealed while on the hunt to assassinate a designated player-controlled target.

No Competitive Multiplayer In This Year’s Assassin’s Creed Games

Dedicated fans of the competitive multiplayer mode may be disappointed to hear this news, however Ubisoft states that it is for the best (courtesy of Joystiq):

“Our aim was to have a seamless single-to-multi experience: This is why we are not opposing single player and co-op; we have ancestral missions dealing with Arno’s story and Brotherhood missions dealing with Arno’s duties towards the Brotherhood.”

“With Assassin’s Creed Unity, the pillars of the franchise have evolved thanks to the potential of new-generation consoles. With that evolution, we wanted to bring a new type of multiplayer experience, which was asked for by fans and which we wanted to explore for a long time: cooperative gameplay.”

It was already announced that Assassin’s Creed Rogue would not have any co-op or competitive multiplayer modes of any kind. However, in the case of Assassin’s Creed: Unity, the multiplayer is focused on 4-player co-op. As stated above, Ubisoft desires Unity to have a seamless transition between single and multiplayer game modes, and a competitive multiplayer aspect would have a damaging effect on that goal. Ubisoft tried to implement a similar “seamless” system in Watch_Dogs, but that game’s multiplayer was purely player vs. player. Nevertheless, Ubisoft seems to be set on delivering a new, fan-requested multiplayer experience, in the form of cooperative multiplayer.

Below is a video showcasing Unity‘s co-op multiplayer for your viewing pleasure.

Assassin’s Creed: Unity releases for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on October 28th, with Assassin’s Creed Rogue coming out soon afterwards for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on November 11th.
