When Ubisoft’s highly anticipated Watch Dogs released back in May, many people were disappointed that it didn’t live up to the hype. Along with a severe outcry towards the fact that graphics had been severely downgraded (compared to the E3 2012 video), the gameplay wasn’t as revolutionary as expected. Once again, gamers around the world became the victim of the hype machine.
However, surely some gamers must have enjoyed the hack-centric gameplay of Watch Dogs. Imagine being able to hack surveillance cameras or traffic lights in other open-world game worlds, such as Los Santos or Liberty City.
Well, imagine no longer, because PC game modder, JulioNIB, in collaboration with Yeardley Diamond and ac amir, have just released a GTA IV Watch Dogs mod that allows players to do just that in the crime-ridden streets of Grand Theft Auto IV. The mod is aptly named Watch Dogs IV.
Initially, the mod just included Watch Dogs‘ camera hacking gameplay mechanic, but over time the mod evolved to include an Aiden Pearce model, complete with trademark fluttering trench coat (which was probably the best looking thing in the original game). Other included features include Watch Dogs‘ mobile radio scripts/sound assets, and custom animations that look remarkably similar to the game the mod was based on. Aiden sticks his hands into his coat pockets, and does that awkward sprint when he runs. The heads-up display has also been redesigned to look exactly like that of Watch Dogs. Gamers can even cause ctOS blackouts, and beat criminals into submission with Aiden’s signature baton.
At first glance, gamers will be hard-pressed to tell that they’re actually watching Grand Theft Auto IV. The game looks and sounds almost exactly like Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs (As I was researching sources to write this article, I watched a video containing gameplay footage of the mod, and I honestly thought I was being trolled. The mod makes GTA IV look just like Watch Dogs.)
Aside from relatively unchanged pedestrian models, and the fact that you’re in Liberty City, rather than Chicago, the mod does what it does exceptionally well.
