Super Smash Bros 3DS is only two weeks away from its Japanese release. Nintendo have released a five minute video mostly of gameplay footage for us. Check it out.
In this video, we see a cast of returning characters. Pikachu, Link, Samus and Bowser etc. All the ones we’re used to. Later on in the video, we see gameplay of new characters, like Pacman, Rosalina and the Villager. It’s nice to see some consistent gameplay footage from these new characters and from what we can see, they look like a blast to play.
The graphics also look gorgeous. Seeing as the 3DS naturally doesn’t have the same capabilities as the Wii U, the 3DS version has a lovely cel-shaded look, that actually works quite well.
We see a lot of returning stages like Corneria, along with new stages like (what looks like) Link’s train from Spirit Tracks. Along with the returning stages are returning items, like Pokéballs, and new items like a big ass laser gun and classic Mario powerups.
At 2:30 in, we see returning game mods like the Home Run Contest (a personal favourite) and Target Smash (speedrunners, get ready). Collecting trophies is also making a return, so for anyone who wants to 100% the game, you’ll have a large journey ahead of you.
One major change seems to be the ability to customise certain moves. For example, Kirby’s inhale attack can be changed to one that exhales ice, freezing the opponent, or one that leaps into the air before inhaling. This could lead to a lot of balance issues, but a lot of variety in people playing the same characters.
There’s not much more information we can gather from the video unless it’s released in English at some point. But it’s lovely to see some gameplay footage, both of new features to the series, and the old.
