It looks like the globe trotting nature of the Call of Duty series will be returning in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. In Call of Duty: Ghosts, the narrative took place in America and South America, which was a nice change of pace but also limited the creativity of the level locations. However, according to Aaron Halon, the Senior Development Director at Sledgehammer Games, Advanced Warfare will be “all over the place”.
Advanced Warfare focuses on the far future where Private Military Corporations take mercenary contracts to fight in conflicts, meaning that we’re likely to see battles occur across the entire world. A quote from Halon reads:
“We have this idea of this private military corporation that can really be anywhere. It’s not a border on border conflict where you know where the front line is.
Again, the nice thing about fighting an enemy that can be anywhere is we have the excuse to see the game anywhere we want to, which is fun. We try to have each level with a great variety, where we bounce back and forth between different settings.”
Halon disclosed that conflicts will take place anywhere from Korea, to San Francisco, Eastern Europe, and likely more locations. This will be an exciting way of seeing diverse and creative set pieces that are bound to be memorable, as Call of Duty games have done in the past.
Halon also briefly mentioned aspects of the narrative, including the morality of plot points, as he says “We have some shades of gray [in the plot] and we also have some twists and turns where maybe someone you think might be the villain maybe isn’t the villain.” This is interesting, as it suggests that there’s no clear ‘bad guy’ in this story compared to previous COD games and we might have a deeper, more involved story that gets the player to think of circumstances. We’ll get to experience the full single player campaign experience when Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare launches on November 4 2014 for multiple platforms.
