Roku is a streaming device that was first released back in 2008 and the first to support Netflix. There is now over 1,800 channels available in a variety of genres. This device remains one of the most used and the most popular on the market. A milestone was recently reached as 10 million units has been sold.

The total number of units that have been sold includes the Roku Streaming Stick that became available this year. However, CNET reports that the company may start to experience a slowdown. The company has sold 3 million units between the period of April 2013 through January 14. One cause for concern is only 2 million of the units have been sold through the first nine months of 2014.

There are many reasons for this perceived decrease in sales. One reason could be increased competition from the Amazon Fire TV or Google’s Chromecast. Another reason is their Roku 3 unit has not really seen any type of update, other than software updates in over 18 months.

Roku sales many be slowing, but usage remains strong. According to a report commissioned by Roku, there is over 37 million hours of content is streamed each week compared to the 15 million using Apple TV, 12 million using Chromecast, and 6 million using Fire TV. Users also average more hours per month than any competing devices.

Many new models of television have Roku television built into the user interface. Roku sales may seem to be stalling, but a bright future seems assured.
