With the latest update to Steam, we’ve been introduced to the Steam Curators System, which allows people or groups to recommend games to audiences. Major sites like PC Gamer have already taken to this system, providing great recommendations. Here’s what Seam have put on their FAQ regarding the system:
This system has barely been introduced, and there are already people abusing the system in many ways. From creating groups that advertise illegal game key sales in the review (which could eventually be displayed for thousands to see), to those which simple aim to troll.
Valve seems to have taken notice of this however, and some of the pages which advertise keys for games have been taken down. But will this cull the tide? People have been abusing the Steam review section for ages, posting comments which aren’t even user reviews. As much as Valve attempts to clamp down on this issue, there will always be the few reviews (or in this case, curators) that manage to pass through the system. Suffice to say, Valve needs to implement a solid filtering system to keep the rotten curators at bay.
The first impressions of Steam’s new storefront has been great, and the Curator system is a fantastic idea. If you’re a PC gamer, follow the curators who specialise in that area. Like FPS’s? Find a curator that’s enthusiastic about them to find the perfect game for you. However, as of now, the system is far from complete. At the moment you can report groups if they’re doing anything dodgy, but you’re unable to report individual curations. So if one curator in a group you loves posts a dodgy link, then your only option is to report the entire group. In this case, a few bad apples do spoil the bunch.
