FCC Approves Trials For Digital Phone System Transition

by GH Staff

AT&T and Verizon have been approved by regulators to test the possibility of changing telephone numbers to IP addresses. The trial for transition from analog to digital network has been approved unanimously by the Federal Communications Commission board.

According to Reuters, the experiment approved by the FCC “would seek to establish, among other things, how consumers welcome the change and how new technology performs in emergency situations, including in remote locations.”

Experiments like this are important for telecommunications companies to help them fully replace their copper-based networks to fiber or wireless.
