Amiibo's

Nintendo of America announced via Youtube that 11 additional amiibo’s are being released in 2015 worldwide. They also implied that, for American buyers at least, various amiibo’s will be exclusive to certain retailers. The following amiibo’s are planned to be released in February 2015:

  • Toon Link (Legend of Zelda)
  • Ike (Fire Emblem)
  • Lucario (Pokemon)
  • King Dedede (Kirby)
  • Bowser (Mario)
  • Mega Man (Mega Man)
  • Sheik (Legend of Zelda)
  • Shulk (Xenoblade Chronicles)
  • Meta Knight (Kirby)
  • Rosalina and Luma (Mario)
  • Sonic the Hedgehog (Sonic)

These various figures will be compatible with different games, including Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Hyrule Warriors. In addition, Nintendo also announced that a few upcoming titles will also have some degree of amiibo compatibility. These titles include Captain Toad’s Treasure Tracker, Mario Party 10, Yoshi’s Woolly World, and Kirby and the Rainbow Cruise. Details on what the amiibo’s will do in the upcoming games are currently unknown. A list of the other upcoming amiibo’s is down below. The first set of amiibo’s will be released on the same day as Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, on November 21st, 2014.

The Retro Goat Reacts: While I understand why some people would be skeptical about amiibo’s, I think they’re pretty cool, and I’ve got a “more the merrier” mindset with them. Paying for DLC is never fun, but being able to purchase a physical item that unlocks different things in different games is really neat. I’m also a collector, so having these items actually do something in different games, including games the characters themselves aren’t it, makes them seem even more worth it. Now I admit the pricing is a bit steep at around $13 a piece, especially taking into account the probability that there will end up being over 50 amiibo’s, but it wouldn’t surprise me to hear that there are bundle packs for characters of a certain franchise at a cheaper price, so you could buy all the amiibo’s you want without killing your wallet. The potential for future amiibo compatibility does hype me up, including the idea of getting to play as different characters in upcoming games, such as the idea of unlocking Marth in Fire Emblem U by scanning him, but that’s for another article.

As promised, here is a list of the previously announced amiibo figures. The first set, as mentioned, comes out November 21st, and an additional six will come out in December.

  • Mario (Mario)
  • Link (Legend of Zelda)
  • Pikachu (Pokemon)
  • Fox McCloud (Star Fox)
  • Villager (Animal Crossing)
  • Donkey Kong (Mario/Donkey Kong)
  • Yoshi (Mario)
  • Samus Aran (Metroid)
  • Marth (Fire Emblem)
  • Wii Fit Trainer (Wii Fit)
  • Princess Peach (Mario)
  • Kirby (Kirby)

The additional six coming out December 2014 are:

  • Luigi (Mario)
  • Princess Zelda (Legend of Zelda)
  • Captain Falcon (F-Zero)
  • Little Mac (Punch Out)
  • Pit (Kid Icarus)
  • Diddy Kong (Donkey Kong)
