Samsung has produced a range of smartphones under the Galaxy series. These have traditionally helped the company to rival the iPhone models. Samsung has gained a lot of popularity with the Galaxy series. However the latest release, the Galaxy S5 has taken a hit in number of sales in 2014 and consequently, Samsung has provided for some major price cuts. This puts the Galaxy S5 in the same price range as Motorola’s X2.
Although having been bashed by critics all over, the Galaxy S5 still proves to be good for the money. Both the S5 and the X2 are very similar in terms of weight and physical dimensions. Weighing in at around 145 grams, the S5 measures 142 mm by 72.5 mm by 8.1 mm while the X2 measures 140.8 mm by 72.4 mm by 10mm. The display size of the S5 is 5.1 inches, which just falls short of the 5.2 inch screen of the Moto X2. The X2 however uses on-screen buttons which are not present on the S5. This makes the S5 screen more available to users. Both these smartphones feature a full high definition display of 1080 by 1920 pixels and have very similar pixel densities. The Galaxy S5 features a super AMOLED screen while the X2 features a simple AMOLED.
The Samsung device is also protected by a Gorilla Glass and is also resistant to water to a good extent. The device is able to withstand submersion into a meter of water for about half an hour. While the X2 is also water resistant to some degree, it cannot boast of quality tests like the ones the S5 has performed. The Galaxy S5 is also equipped with a fingerprint touch sensor akin to that of the iPhone. This feature is not available on the X2 which relies on the traditional security methods of pin locks and recognized patterns.
Both these devices are available in variants of 16 GB and 32 GB. While the Galaxy offers external micro-SD card storage, expandable to up to 128 GB, this feature is completely lacking in the Moto X2. Both the X2 and the S5 offer 2 gigabytes of RAM for operation.
The Galaxy S5 also proudly features a 16 MP rear camera, which is a marked improvement over prior models in the series. The S5 is capable of some great features including underwater photography and video recording in 4K. In contrast, the Motorola X2 has a 13 MP camera and is not capable of 4K recording.
Both the Galaxy S5 and the Moto X2 provide for smooth and seamless operation. They run on the same Android KitKat OS and feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor chip. The CPU clocks in at 2.5 GHz and an Adreno chip serves as the GPU for both devices.
In terms of price, the Motorola X2, having been launched later than the S5, comes out to be more expensive. The 16 GB variant of the X2 is priced at about $680 while the corresponding 16 GB of the Galaxy S5 costs around $550.
