Metrico is easily the strangest title released this year so far, it is a game with the strangest concept that turns what looks like a simple platforming game, into an addictive challenging puzzler. It is a title that has won a couple of awards, a title that first grabbed media attention during 2012 at its showing at PAX.

Metrico (2)

Metrico outright is visually striking offering an abundance of shapes to traverse while maintaining an eerie yet a compelling atmosphere. It has no story, it has no purpose yet it works….. To an extent.

Its worlds are filled with infographics that react to whatever you do in the game, its cleverly done and as such provides a completely unique and somewhat fun and addictive experience. Levels are unpredictable and as you get further into the game you will encounter numerous ways in which you can meet what seems like an impending doom.

Metrico is certainly as challenging as it looks, but beyond that it is a mess control wise.

The problem with Metrico is simply the amount of the PS Vita inputs it utilizes, which ends up being all of them. This has been proven to work great in games such as Tear Away as the controls are used sparsely. Metrico seems to have gone mad with options as in some cases you must use all the controls within a short frame of time in order to overcome the various obstacles, it essentially over complicates things.

It’s sad as the ideas behind Metrico were grand, the visual aesthetics, the gameplay and the inspiring soundtrack that sends you into a trance. It’s one of those strange indie titles that managed to grab an array of attention too, as it stood out from the crowd, much like Proteus and games alike.

Metrico (3)

It is still at its core a beautiful title that at the beginning of the game seems well woven but sadly as you get further into it and the string unweaves itself, Metrico delivers some of the most messy control schemes known to man.

This isn’t to say the game isn’t worth playing as it is still highly addictive and as a PS Plus member its free this month anyway, just don’t expect to be bewildered by the sheer imaginations that the game developers clearly had. Expect to be bewildered by the combination of Vita controls that you will be using towards the end of the relatively short journey.
