Jarcorp Interactive has revealed Amphibian, a frog-themed RPG that trades traditional grind for a curated, story-driven experience. The announcement came during the 2026 Future Games Show, confirming the game will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam in 2028. The news was reported by Rpgsite.
The game stands out for what it deliberately omits: no shops, no currencies, and no random encounters. According to the official reveal, this design choice eliminates grindable content entirely, pushing players toward a focused narrative about family, sacrifice, and generational violence in a world of bipedal, talking frogs and toads.
Described as a “somber, story-driven, frog-based, Super2D RPG,” Amphibian draws inspiration from classic console adventures while modernizing the presentation with pixel art enhanced by contemporary visual effects and perspective.
A Story of Drought and War
The narrative centers on Sapo, a frog protagonist forced into conflict when a countrywide drought drives his allies into war against invading toads. The premise sets up a tale that the developers say explores heavy themes within a concise campaign structure.
Jarcorp Interactive co-founders Greg Alexandropoulos and James Roumeliotis emphasized the game’s design philosophy in the announcement: “The guiding principle of Amphibian is the synthesis of intentionality and purpose. Where every aspect of the gameplay matters.” They also positioned the title for a specific audience: “We’re making Amphibian for RPG fans who want an emotional, impactful experience, weaved into a concise, hard-hitting, turn-based adventure.”
Combat Without the Grind
Battles in Amphibian feature a party of four facing beasts, frog predators, and other deadly amphibians in turn-based encounters. The combat system draws from classic RPGs of the GameCube and Game Boy Advance era, but with a crucial twist: all battles are fully curated, with no random encounters and no way to grind levels.
Players must manage health and resources intelligently, with the difficulty designed to make mistakes consequential without feeling unfair or punishing. The campaign intentionally limits side content, creating what the developers describe as “an experience with no filler, where every encounter and system serves the story.”
Between battles, exploration incorporates light 2D platforming and puzzles inspired by old-school survival horror games, adding variety to the world traversal across the detailed frog and toad environments.
Character Growth and Presentation
Each hero can be developed through a branching class system that the developers say ensures “no two builds are the same,” enabling a wide variety of play styles and party compositions. This system provides the customization depth typically associated with the genre, even within the game’s streamlined structure.
On the audio side, GRAMMY-winning producer Shireen Ghosh, known for work on Sword of the Sea and Towerborne, leads the sound design. Creative director Greg Alexandropoulos, frontman of the band Western Education, contributes an original, rock-driven soundtrack for the game.
Amphibian will support English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, and Simplified Chinese at launch. The game is slated for release across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam in 2028.
