MX vs ATV Supercross Review

MX vs ATV is back, Supercross is the latest titled game in the franchise. It brings thrilling Motocross and All Terrain Vehicular racing to the last generation of consoles. 

MX vs ATV is back, Supercross for me is a superb title, sure it has a few slight drawbacks which I will explain below, but overall the game delivers exactly what I was expecting and a little more. It features race after adrenaline fueled race where the object is not only to come first, but also to rack up points by performing stunts. Progressing through the career unlocks various modifications for your vehicle of choice. These range from decals to engine customization and you can even add your own little touch to your rider to make him/ her unique.

I love games with customization, I feel that it adds depth while giving the player the opportunity to make his/ her rider and vehicle of choice more unique thus standing out when online.

Visually MX vs ATV Supercross is quite decent, obviously when I go back to the last generation to review games nothing ever looks as good, but this game is definitely a great looking game with tracks looking detailed and well textured. Riders and their bikes/ quads also look good when comparing it to other games alike. Be warned though the jaggies from all of the last generations of games are now even more noticeable if you switch between consoles.

The sound is also well done, whether you are spraying mud whilst cornering or flying through the air doing a 180, the game sounds never falter making you feel even closer to the experience.

Sadly, as mentioned above, there is a clear problem I have with this game. Besides the lack of bikes available to use I have found there is a store under the code name Motoclub Depot in the game. Now I initially though this was something cool and saved it until last, however, upon pressing X on my controller I was transported to a store full of various bikes and ATVs that cost £2.49 each. Micro transactions are evil… Period.

The sad thing about this is that I bet every unsuspecting gamer entered it as nowhere until you had entered had the game explained it was a store and it is the first in game store that loads almost instantly. An achievement in loading the store yes, a great way to include such a store. No. The other downside is that no matter how long you sit in a multiplayer lobby for with your tricked out rider, you never actually seem to be paired with anyone prompting the question why bother.

Despite the problems MX vs ATV Supercross is still a solid game and can be completed without the need to purchase any of the extra vehicles. It is also best enjoyed alone. It is game that will be liked by any motocross fan that is in need of their digital fix. I would certainly recommend this game to anyone looking for a solid experience, just don’t enter their Motoclub Depot as it isn’t a club at all!
