X Mini Kai 2 Review

The X Mini Kai 2 is the latest capsule speaker to be released in the X Mini franchise. It is a promising speaker offering  huge improvements over The X Mini Kai 1. It is a capsule speaker designed to pack a huge punch when it comes to sound as well as offer portability for people who wish to take it wherever they go. Ultimately the capsule speaker is designed for conferencing calls, but it also is of huge interest to us gamers too. We love our gadgets and along with our gaming machines we often try to find a decent source of sound to hear our games from or even our music whilst playing those games.

Well, this capsule is great for both.  The capsule speaker itself is designed nicely, in fact its overall design surpasses the first Kai by miles. It’s a hefty little speaker oozing quality this time round, its body is made from hardened plastic which feels robust and is nicely textured with a slight rubbery feel whilst the base is metal. It even includes a nice sturdy rubber cap that is used to keep the speaker dust free. This cap can also be used as a rubber base with suction caps.

The Kai 2 features Bluetooth compatibility as well as your average 3.5mm audio jack so that you can connect it to any device. An in-built mic and battery that lasted around 10 hours for me with the volume cranked up completes the package. The speaker also has ceramic drivers which certainly helps produce a crisp sound with deep bass through the small 2.5 watt speaker.  It also works great as a hands free mobile device and you can plug any headphones into it essentially making them Bluetooth compatible. This is activated by a flick of a switch and the device is super easy to pair, it does so automatically with most devices however certain devices required the usual 4 zero password.

I practically tested this device on everything, with the PlayStation 3 it pairs as a Bluetooth mic, which is cool. It is not compatible with the PS4 yet which is quite annoying. It also connects to the PlayStation Vita brilliantly as the mic and speaker work in tandem to deliver game sound as well as being able to chat in game and it works fantastic with mobiles, tablets and PCs. The mic sound is also quite good overall, clear, but sadly background noise does creep in from time to time. The speaker though is absolutely brilliant, it is loud and crisp and certainly sets a high bar for mini speakers alike but there is a small drawback.

When the speaker is turned up to max depending on the bass levels, it vibrates so much that it starts moving across any surface it is placed on, It can be eliminated by using the suction pad cap/base and to be honest this seemed to be the only potential problem. Overall the X Mini Kai 2 packs a huge punch and delivers in all aspects, it is a grand little device and is built with quality in mind. The little speaker certainly isn’t anything like a big surround sound system, but it’s not trying to be. It is, simply, a quality great sounding portable speaker that is packed with features and offered at an affordable price. It also looks super cool by any gaming device.

The X Mini Kai 2 is set to release in Malaysia in the beginning of August in several colors so presumably by the end of August it will release worldwide. It will retail for £39.95 in the UK and around $60 in the US. It is a great device for that price and you should certainly look out for it!
