The Oculus Rift VR Headset is one of the most anticipated gadgets in the gaming world to date and has to potential to be a game changer for the industry. Oculus VR, the guys behind the creation of the Oculus Rift dont want potential buyers to have to worry about a high price tag.
GamesIndustry International interviews Palmer Luckey, Oculus VR’s founder, and he stated that he wants to keep the device affordable for the regular consumer. “I’ve always said that if VR isn’t affordable it might as well not exist for most people. We’re not looking to make a rich person’s toy, we’re not looking to make a research tool,” Luckey said in the interview.
In a report last year, Gamespot stated that Oculus VR CEO Brendon Iribe hopes that the device will sell for $300 with the added possibility of the price dropping over time or moving to a free with subsidies system similar to a cell phone plan.
“You can’t sell an expensive piece of hardware and expect tons of content to how up. We’re not doind market research around what’s the breaking point for people to buy a VR Headset, we’re just trying to sell it cheap as we can while still existing as a company,” Luckey said in the GamesIndustry interview.
At the electronic Entertainment Expo in January, the Oculus Rift was one of the largest draws.
$300 is defiantly a fair and competitive price for this piece of hardware. Sony is also working on a VR headset for the PS4 and is expected to be revealed at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco this month.
