Blizzard will add Xal’atath to Heroes of the Storm on September 28. She will be the game’s first new playable character since Hogger arrived in 2020. An unnamed Blizzard franchise leader said a positive response from players could lead to more activity around the long-running MOBA, but the company has not announced what will follow her release.
Xal’atath is a Ranged Assassin associated with World of Warcraft: Midnight. Blizzard’s official reveal trailer says she brings the powers of the Void to the Nexus. The accompanying Hero Spotlight identifies high damage and area control as her strengths.
Blizzard published both official videos on September 12, the day it announced the character at BlizzCon 2026. Both came from the official Heroes of the Storm channel. The reveal confirms the September 28 date and Void theme, while the Hero Spotlight supplies the combat profile.
Xal’atath is built around damage and area control
Blizzard describes Xal’atath as a vulnerable, low-survivability hero designed to deal high damage and control areas. The Hero Spotlight pairs those strengths and weaknesses with the Ranged Assassin role.
Players will get their first opportunity to test the character when the Heroes of the Storm PTR opens on September 14, two weeks before the scheduled live release.
Blizzard is also offering a limited-time Heartseeker Xal’atath skin for pre-purchase. The offer appears in the descriptions for both the reveal trailer and the separate Hero Spotlight.
The first new hero since Hogger
Xal’atath ends a six-year gap between new Heroes of the Storm characters. Hogger was the previous addition in 2020, according to IGN’s reporting from BlizzCon.
The new hero follows years of intermittent support rather than a steady run of character releases. IGN notes that Heroes of the Storm received a significant patch in 2023, followed by smaller changes and new skins. None of those updates added a new playable character to the roster.
GamerHeadlines covered Heroes of the Storm’s Artifacts system when Blizzard introduced it in 2014, more than a decade before the Xal’atath announcement.
Blizzard leaves the next step open
According to IGN’s interview report, an unnamed Blizzard franchise leader said the company will “see how this does.” The leader added that “if the community responds well, it could lead to more things,” and called the update the “first foray into something really big.”
Blizzard has not announced a relaunch, development schedule, funding commitment, or roadmap tied to Xal’atath. The leader’s comments describe what a positive response could lead to, not a commitment to another update.
Blizzard President Johanna Faries thanked players “for carrying the torch.” She added, “we might even have another new hero on the way in the future.” No additional character has been formally announced.
