The Overwatch team appeared on the Official Xbox Podcast at BlizzCon 2026 to discuss Season 5’s newest hero Doctrine, the new map Grimsvotn, and updates to Sombra and Roadhog. Hosts Lina Madrid and Jeff Rubenstein were joined by game director Aaron Keller and designer Ben Bell, who walked through the reveal and the changes coming to the roster.
Doctrine Arrives as the Ninth Hero of the Year
Keller said the team announced five new heroes at the Overwatch Spotlight event in February, has released a new hero every season since, and culminated at BlizzCon 2026 by announcing the ninth hero of the year. Doctrine is that ninth hero. He is a support hero, inspired by a vampire, and he is a villain. His fantasy revolves around life energy and deciding whether someone lives or dies.
His weapon is a scepter that can both heal allies and damage enemies, and it requires precise aim. He also has a dash that reduces damage taken, and a drone he can send to allies that heals them and speeds up their attacks. A transform ability with multiple charges changes his other abilities: the dash can become flight, the drone can also speed up his own attacks and heal him, and the transformed scepter can pierce enemies. Keller described Doctrine as a high-skill-ceiling hero with a strategic element. Doctrine will play a big part in the wrap-up of the story the team has been telling, which ends next season in Season 5.
Sombra Moves to Support as Roadhog Loses One-Shot Power
Sombra’s role is moving from DPS to support. She keeps stealth and can still hack enemy abilities, but only by using her ultimate now. She will stay near the team more and heal teammates. Roadhog gains an ability to absorb damage from the enemy team, and his one-shot potential is reduced. His primary fire now fires in a two-hit cadence, giving opponents more time to react.
Grimsvotn, the Planet’s Highest-Security Prison
The new map is Grimsvotn, also called Watchpoint Grimsvotn. Keller described it as the highest-security prison on the planet where the most dangerous criminals are locked away, and it is an escort map. Doomfist was imprisoned there before escaping, and it is where Doomfist met Doctrine. The BlizzCon 2026 event also included other announcements, as Blizzard revealed Diablo V during the same show. Overwatch has also been active outside the game, recently teaming up with the artist YOASOBI on an anime-style music video.
