Arrowhead Game Studios Creative Director Mikael Eriksson says the Helldivers 2 Devoid of Liberty update “has run its course” in a retrospective published September 25, 2026.
Eriksson called the update a “vertical slice” of what the studio wants the game to be every week, prioritizing fantasy cohesion over new content.
Void Presence and Illuminate Lore
The Void’s presence “transcended the game,” according to Eriksson. It was felt beyond the Super Destroyer windows and Galactic War map, appearing in mission descriptions, on the battlefield, in war reporting, and in community creations.
He said the studio wanted to go deeper on Illuminate lore after exploring the Terminid Hive Worlds and Automaton Cyborg Factories. The earlier Heart of Democracy update told a classic invasion story; this time the team explored who the Illuminate really are and how they work.
The Void was designed as an oppressive, alien environment that resented the player’s presence, built from haunting environmental audio design and unsettling visual distortion of Void flora. The update added twisted, razor-limbed human experiments as new enemy variants and expanded the Illuminate Fleet system, grouping Illuminate enemies into different Fleets.
Eriksson said the studio is considering applying the Fleet approach to all factions so players always consider what they are about to engage.
SEAF Squadmates and the Warhammer 40,000 Crossover
Eriksson said the feature he is most excited about is SEAF squadmates, AI squadmates that follow commands and react to the fight. He said it gives solo players and understaffed squads a lifeline without breaking the four-Helldiver experience.
The Warhammer 40,000 Castellan’s Creed Warbond crossover brought in new players without diluting the game’s tone, and Eriksson said the studio chooses partners with care.
Stability, Feedback, and Next Steps
Eriksson acknowledged launch stability “was too patchy,” citing crashes on fullscreen terminal interaction and issues for players using ultra-wide monitors, which required two follow-up patches.
The most common community feedback was a desire for more time in the Void and for community choices to shape the ending more clearly. The studio is working on campaign structure, including how many phases a Campaign runs, how long content stays live, and how much room Game Masters have to react to the community.
Some quality-of-life requests remain in the backlog; assist-reloading and backpack icon clarity were recent wins. Stability will stay the priority between updates. Eriksson said, “The Void isn’t finished with us.”
Helldivers 2 is available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
