SpaceRocket Games and Toplitz Productions have launched Permafrost in Early Access on Steam. The official Steam announcement went live on October 9, 2026, confirming that the moon has shattered and Earth is locked in an endless winter. The Steam page describes the setting as a story-driven survival sandbox in a frozen, post-apocalyptic world, and calls the cold the deadliest enemy. A vast, lore-rich open world awaits discovery, playable alone or in online co-op with up to 4 players.
Exploring the Frozen World
Early Access players can brave cold zones, storms, and hunger in a world where the cold is relentless. Exploration covers frozen cities, buried forests, caves, and camps full of secrets and rare loot. The survival loop includes gathering resources, crafting tools, and building a shelter. Abandoned shelters can be restored, and old technology brought back to life, while players work out who is still out there.
Not every survivor is friendly. Some will trade with players, while others will fight for every scrap. Raiders and rival factions appear in the world, and players decide who to trust. A loyal dog companion tags along to scout ahead, warn of danger, and carry supplies.
Editions and Roadmap
SpaceRocket Games is offering two editions at launch. The Companion Edition includes the base game and the Official Companion digital book. The Ultimate Edition includes everything in the Companion Edition plus other digital items, such as the Official Cookbook, the original Permafrost soundtrack, and the Permafrost novel. Both editions are listed on the store page.
The developer says Early Access is just the beginning and that Permafrost is still evolving. Player feedback will shape where Permafrost goes next, and a roadmap is available for more details. Steam categorizes the title under action, adventure, RPG, and simulation. SpaceRocket Games also points players to its Discord server to find co-op partners and to the Steam discussions to share first impressions. The survival sandbox genre has stayed busy this fall: Enshrouded is adding its Sparkworks logic system with the game’s 1.0 update, while post-apocalyptic survival fans recently got The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival on Xbox and PC.
