Will there be a South Park: The Stick of Truth Sequel?

by GH Staff

Before South Park: The Stick of Truth’s release, IGN’s Ryan McCaffrey sat down with South Park co-creator Matt Stone. While, talking about the overall experience, Stone revealed how much of a learning process the initial game was. For instance, he explained the reason for the many delays: “There was definitely a big learning curve for Trey and I. We made a lot of mistakes and assumptions. And I’ll cop to the fact that we retooled stuff that we didn’t like and we worked on the game longer than other people would’ve liked us to.”

On top of this, Ryan McCaffrey asked if there was a possibility for a sequel and it was revealed that Matt Stone is open to return to the world of video games if his partner, Trey Parker, is willing. Again, the interview took place before the release of the now popular role-playing game, but Matt Stone stated, “we’ll see how it’s received, [but] this was a hellacious undertaking – much more than when we signed up for it. Never say never. I would do it again, in some fashion. I think that video games are really interesting.”

Now, the recent South Park game was a ‘huge step forward’ from the previous licensed games. However, this interview seems more like a promotion of the current game than a confirmation of another game; for instance, a sequel to South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut was expected after the original movie’s financial and critical success. But over a decade later, the fans are still waiting and have since learned that Parker and Stone have never done the expected. On top of that, early reports state that in order to break even South Park has to sell over two million copies.

But with the success of South Park: The Stick of Truth, it is hard to believe that a sequel will not be given the green-light: across its three platforms the game had a Metacritic review score of 84 out of 100 and it sold the most units in the US until the release of Titanfall. But again, the making of the sequel is going to be based on the willingness of Trey Parker and Matt Stone to devote their time: for now, the fans will have to wait and see.

Do you think there will be a South Park: The Stick of Truth sequel? Will Matt Stone and Trey Parker devote their time to another game or pursue other ventures?
