Oculus Co-Founder “Welcomes Sony” to the Virtual Reality Industry

by GH Staff

This year’s GDC has been a great event for fanatics of virtual reality, as Sony has unveiled its iteration of the medium and the Oculus Rift developers have revealed a new development kit for its esteemed headset. While people were concerned that the people who run Oculus would be irritated with Sony’s decision to enter the market, Oculus co-founder Nate Mitchell stated that he was more than okay with the “rival”.

“We’re super excited to have more companies in this space,” he said, specifically referencing Project Morpheus. “More developers and more companies investing in virtual reality means more resources put towards games. I think the audience is going to get into VR faster, which means more people to sell to.”

This seems to indicate that fanboyism in terms of the Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus is essentially needless (but what kind of fanboyism isn’t, really?), as both Sony and Oculus have now made a public statement about their level of respect for each other. It’s clear that they are less than rivals and more of a joint effort as we lunge forward into the new era of virtual reality.

Mitchell also stated that he hopes Ubisoft will be one of the first developers to be working with virtual reality, despite the company releasing a statement saying that they refuse to work with virtual reality unless the headsets are shown to be selling very well.
