Possible Details about Assassin’s Creed: Comet

Assassin's Creed: Unity

The internet is abuzz with excitement about the recently leaked Assassin’s Creed: Unity.  Set in the chaotic French Revolution, the game is set to premier on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC platforms sometime later this year, and people are excited.  And rightly so—that trailer was pretty cool, right?  But in all the excitement, people seem to be forgetting one important thing about Ubisoft’s reveal: the absence of any details about Assassin’s Creed: Comet.  The game, set for release on the PS3 and Xbox 360, was also exposed in the leak that led Ubisoft to release the Assassin’s Creed: Unity trailer.  But Ubisoft has remained silent with details for the other game.  Obviously it’s hard to guess what the game will be without much in the way of screenshots or trailers, but there are a few safe guesses we can make.

Creating an entirely new game, with all-new assets, for a game that’s second-fiddle to Assassin’s Creed: Unity? Not likely.  Assassin’s Creed: Comet probably won’t be a straight-up port, but expect it to use similar assets.  Could we be looking at games covering two different time periods in France? Assassin’s Creed: Unity is definitely about the revolution, so perhaps Comet could focus on the Napoleonic Wars.

This goes for both versions, but if someone put a gun to our head we’d say that Assassin’s Creed: Comet is slightly more likely to have naval battles.  Ubisoft has created a fantastic naval combat system, and we have a hard time believing they’d just let all that effort go to waste.  But considering that Paris is, in fact, a land-based city, these naval battles will probably be side missions.  Think Assassin’s Creed 3, not Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag.

While France is the most likely setting for Assassin’s Creed: Comet, there are other possibilities.  Judging solely by the name, it’s not inconceivable that it could be set in the “Summer of Love” in 1967, a possible setting confirmed by Black Flag (how great would it be to play as hippie assassin Comet Moonbeam? Your days are numbered, Nixon!)  But one thing is for sure: the game definitely isn’t set in Feudal Japan.  Ubisoft Toronto head Jade Raymond revealed in February that Feudal Japan isn’t the subject of the newest Assassin’s Creed.  Even if one assumes such guarantees aren’t iron-clad, there’s no doubt that an Assassin’s Creed game set in Feudal Japan would overshadow any other setting.  If Ubisoft wanted that, Assassin’s Creed: Unity would be the one in Feudal Japan.
