Koji Igarashi, the veteran behind the modern Castlevania renaissance, has pushed back the release of Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement to 2027. The delay was announced via a video on ArtPlay’s YouTube channel and a subsequent Steam blog post, with Igarashi explaining that the team needs more time to deliver the quality fans expect. The game was originally slated for a vague 2026 launch window. The news was reported by GamesRadar.

The news arrives as something of a double-edged sword for fans of the gothic action series. On one hand, the wait for the prequel to the Kickstarter-funded Ritual of the Night grows longer. On the other, Igarashi’s message is clear: the project has entered its final stages, and the studio is using the extra time to polish the experience rather than rush it out the door.

Why the Delay? Igarashi’s Final-Stage Push

In the announcement video, Igarashi directly addressed the change in schedule. “We have made the decision to move the game’s release to the year 2027,” he said, before offering a glimpse into the development status. “Currently, the development of the game has entered its final stages.”

The tone of the message was apologetic but resolute. “We understand that this is disappointing news for our fans, but everyone in the development team is working hard to make the game the best it can be,” Igarashi concluded in the video. “We sincerely appreciate your continued support.”

The accompanying Steam post echoed that sentiment, thanking the community for its patience. “We’d like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued patience and support,” the statement read. “Your excitement and enthusiasm continue to motivate and inspire us to deliver the best possible experience.”

A Prequel Years in the Making

The Scarlet Engagement was first revealed during a 2025 State of Play presentation, carrying a loose 2026 release date. It is positioned as a prequel to Ritual of the Night, the 2019 action-RPG that Igarashi’s studio ArtPlay funded through a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign. That crowdfunding effort raised $5.5 million in 2015, cementing the Bloodstained series as a spiritual successor to the Castlevania franchise Igarashi helped define, starting with his work as assistant director on Symphony of the Night.

The new title carries the weight of that legacy. As a prequel, it has the unenviable task of expanding a beloved universe while meeting the high bar set by its predecessor. The extra development time, Igarashi suggests, is intended to ensure the game honors that lineage.

What’s Next for Bloodstained Fans

While the delay pushes the release window back a full year, Igarashi offered a small consolation: the studio hopes to release gameplay footage soon. The Steam blog post also included new screenshots of the game, giving fans a fresh look at the gothic art direction while they wait for a more substantial showcase.

For now, the message from ArtPlay is one of patience and gratitude. The team is betting that a 2027 release with a final layer of polish will be worth the wait for a series that has always worn its Castlevania inspirations on its sleeve. Whether that gamble pays off will depend on what the eventual gameplay reveal shows, but Igarashi’s track record suggests he is not one to compromise on the core experience.
