In early December, Telltale revealed the development of a new Game of Thrones game. Telltale has become famous for their episodic games, The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us, which are still actively being developed: The Walking Dead is in its second season, while The Wolf Among Us released the second episode of its first season in February. But at the same time, the company is actively developing Tale From the Borderlands, an adaptation of the Borderlands games, and the aforementioned Game of Thrones.
Telltale’s Game of Thrones will most likely be in the style of the company’s previous games: point and click adventures that have an emphasis on story. And since the December announcement, fans of A Song of Ice and Fire have been wondering when the game will take place; for instance, The Walking Dead took place concurrently with the story of the comics. And it is important to point out that Telltale has the TV series rights and not the book rights, which means the developers have inherited the changes of the show: but again, the question has always been when will the story take place?
And in Digital Trends’ interview with Dan Connors, the CEO of Telltale Games, revealed details that finally confirms that “it’s not a prequel.” Dan Connors further emphasizes that the show’s world enables them to create their own story in the massively diverse universe.
“I think the show provides a timeline, but the world is huge. You’re talking about the politics of an entire– it’s like Europe and some other continent. There’s so much going on and it’s so rich. Every decision that King Joffrey makes impacts so many people. Any microcosm in that world [looking at how] people are affected by the decisions that are made plays out across the whole thing.”
This ultimately means that the game will take place concurrently with the TV show; however, it is uncertain if you will interact with key characters from the program. But his comments have made it clear that they want to avoid a retelling of the main storyline; most likely, the important events will be present but it will be seen from a different point of view or it will serve as the background to the main story. But Connors next statement makes it sound like the company is in very early development with figuring out the storyline and where the game will be set.
“The show does a great job of interpreting George R.R. Martin’s work, and his work provides a huge dictionary of knowledge about what the franchise is. It’s really a dream to sit down and say, ‘What’s our space in this world? Where are we in this world?’ And the world offers you so much to explore.”
It is probably going to be quite sometime before Telltale’s Game of Thrones will be released, but it is turning out to be one of the most anticipated games of the next few years. Between Telltale’s previous success and the lackluster quality of the previous Game of Thrones video games, fans hope that this attempt will highlight the strengths of the show, while also telling a unique story. But again, Telltale’s Game of Thrones is in early development and besides this new knowledge, there is no information on its release date or what consoles it will be released on.
