With cross-compatible Windows, PC and Linux versions, being one of the first games to feature Oculus Rift support, and a player-made content library worth an estimated $50 million, the quirky class-based shooter Team Fortress 2 has become one of the most popular free-to-play titles ever created….even though it may not have started as one. One of Valve’s flagship titles, Team Fortress 2 has featured several expansions that have been tacked into free updates and patches. Apart from smaller bug fixes and balancing adjustments, major updates have included new maps, modes, weapons, Class content, media creation, custom content creation and more.
A new post on the official Team Fortress website teases at even more items to come for the blue-collar shooter. The new series of the Team Fortress 2 webcomic saga, “Team Fortress Comics”, received its third installment. The current series deals with the mercenaries disbanding after the Mann Co. takeover by antagonist Gray Mann. While it’s in its conceptual stages, Valve teased a new map, set to take place within a Moonbase. There’s almost no information about it, however Valve states that “it’s got a whole bunch of interesting new gameplay and we’re pretty excited about it. We think you will be too.” The short statement is accompanied with a piece of concept art (shown above), showing the Heavy outside what appears to be a massive space station on the Moon.
Team Fortress 2 players are no strangers to item drops, character customization and trading player-made content. Past updates added the ability to craft and trade items, create wearable custom content, and produce films via Source Filmmaker. Valve is continuing this trend, as the developer is currently working on a way for players to upload their own, custom-created Taunts into Steam Workshop. It’s hinted that more Class Taunts are coming from Valve as well, as shown in a teaser GIF.
Having a custom, personal Taunt in a video game adds that extra bit of personal satisfaction after a beautiful kill….so hopefully this isn’t all just a day-late April Fool’s announcement for Team Fortress 2.
