Temple Run vs Temple Run 2: The Main Differences

Temple Run

We all love fast-paced apps that can hold our undivided attention, and we definitely have an apparent soft spot for a certain app about dashing through ruthless terrain whilst being chased by a hoard demonic primates. Of course, we’re going to be talking about Imangi Studio’s Temple Run; comparing the predecessor to the sequel and listing both version’s unique focal points.

Temple Run’s original content that has been available on the App Store and Android devices since 2011 reached their peak of 150 million+ downloads before the well-awaited sequel was released in January of 2013. As of now; Temple Run 2’s popularity for Imangi Studios has continued to escalate. Even holding an outstanding record in the past for amassing 50 million+ downloads in less than two weeks.

So let’s get into what each app has to offer, shall we?

  • Has a more casual, organic feel to it. As if you’re in an Indiana Jones-esque setting which’ll feel familiar to the player. It’s not too far out there, nor too limited—just something that you’d be expecting from the game’s overall theme.
  • Tends to come off as being “slow paced,” or at least more so then its sequel.
  • Fairly simplistic in execution. The swiping and movement of the device isn’t too strenuous.
  • Has seven ape-sized demon monkeys in pursuit.
  • Collecting three types of coins, with yellow being most common and blue holding more worth in-game.

  • Kind of goes out on a limb in obtaining an interesting “sky temple” theme. Basically, the location has switched over to a floating (or suspended) temple. Which took an entirely different spin on the original game’s environment.
  • Seen as being more “fast-paced” mostly due to actions being more interactive. For example, the ability to zip across zip lines.
  • Due to there being so much more content and actions to do, the interface is a little more complex even though it shares the same controls as its ancestor. There’s power-ups as well as possible perks, and a new “tapping” feature in order to use them.
  • The graphics are crisp, and far clearer than the prior installment. It just looks cleaner in every respect.
  • Has one gigantic demon monkey, not to mention its own audible growls.
  • In addition to coins, the player can occasionally collect gems which’ll allow the player to automatically resurrect wherever you die.

Temple Run was an astounding step in the right direction for Imangi Studios, but if you really want to see the app in all its glory—Temple Run 2 is ahead by a thin margin. Both games are rather true to their roots and share a lot of the same gameplay. However, in Temple Run 2 there’s just more to do. Its appearance has received a noticeable upgrade, and it feels like an improvement from the original idea which spurned its creation. While it might lack some of the nostalgic charm of Temple Run, the sequel is built from the gathered feedback acquired from the series origin in order to compile the best app possible for Imangi Studios. Those individuals who flooded in to download Temple Run 2 were definitely onto something!

If you had to choose either, which would it be and why?
