Since the Xbox One was unveiled in early 2013, its reception wasn’t so welcoming. From the look of the box, to the hardware specs, to the price, many believed the console would be doomed upon release. After a successful 2013 E3 presentation, Microsoft proceeded to change the negative expectations of the console. Microsoft even went as far as changing its policies for the One to better satisfy its customers. Several months have passed and the console has finally begun to take shape. This leaves many wondering, what’s forthcoming for Microsoft’s next generation gaming machine?
Five months have passed since the Xbox One’s November 22nd release. In that time, the console has seen multiple updates further improving its capabilities. Microsoft has also been on a bit of a hot streak. They have announced their id@xbox initiative which will be bringing a bunch of indie games to the console from over 50 different developers. They have also announced Directx 12 support for the console coming sometime in 2015. That last one in particular seems to be the most anticipated. With the recent struggles the Xbox One has encountered with game resolution, the unveiling of Directx 12 support has surely peeked a lot of interest.
Microsoft has also been pushing the notion that the Xbox One will be a gaming machine first and foremost. Phil Spencer, new head of the Xbox department, has stated that Microsoft will once again will showcase games for the Xbox One at this year’s E3. There have also been talks of Xbox apps becoming available without the need of Xbox Live. Once again, Phil Spencer spoke about the possibility of this transition. Microsoft has also promised external storage will soon be making its way to Xbox One. Microsoft looks to be pushing for success with this console and they seem to be doing a fine job so far.
If the Xbox 360 is any indication of what could possibly be in store for the Xbox One, Microsoft sits in a very good position. While there’s room for growth on the Xbox One, the system has already seen a lot of improvement. A lot of what made the 360 a fantastic machine didn’t come until a couple years after its release. The Xbox One has a long way to go, but only five months into release, it has started to look very promising. This looks to be a fine year for Microsoft, Xbox One, and gamers alike.
