This morning at PAX East, we’ve managed to gather a little more information on Bethesda and Tango Games’ upcoming survival horror experience starring the mental hospital gone awry in The Evil Within. It seems from the gameplay trailer that was also released to the public on Bethesda’s official channel that we’re to expect an almost Silent Hill version of a twisted tale. Beginning with a massacre at a mental facility, it seemed almost reminiscent of Outcast in the beginning. However, that changes rather abruptly as the entire setting transforms into a psychedelic version of unadulterated horror. Including rivers of blood, inane torture devices, and the monster-esque humanoid fiends that’re looking to hinder your progress at every available corner.
Director Shinji Mikami is most known for his work on Resident Evil 4, and we can definitely see the small tidbits of influence being sprinkled about in The Evil Within. Detective Sebastian Castellanos does share a lot of similar characteristics to the late protagonist, but we wouldn’t exactly say that they’re both cut from the same cloth. You can definitely expect some terrifying experiences that will be unique to the game; such as the eventual execution of Sebastian’s partners that’ve been alluded to in this accessible trailer. The footage is embedded below, take a quick moment to watch and attest your own judgement on The Evil Within.
Expectations are relatively high for Bethesda and Tango Games, considering that this will be their newest addition to the survival horror genre that’s due later this year. With games such as Alien: Isolation and some indie developers releasing their own take on enticing the player with psychological horror; the reoccurring question is if The Evil Within will have the gall in order to stand up to its relentless competition. We believe so, since the gameplay seems to mirror a lot of what we’ve seen in the Silent Hill franchise. Right down to the colossal figure of a man with a safe on his head meshed with some mangled barbed wire, not that we need to tell you who he’s reminding us of–.
The Evil Within will become available on August 26 in North America and August 29 in Europe, so you’ll be able to explore that contorted world for yourself on either the Xbox One, PS4, PS3, Xbox 360 or PC.
Are there some expectations that you have in accordance to The Evil Within‘s forthcoming debut?
