The highly anticipated NPD numbers for the month of March 2014 are finally out, and we’re seeing some interesting, yet somewhat predictable results. The gaming industry has seen a massive drop compared to the same period last year, mainly due to the limited number of AAA games released this year in March (last year, we saw major titles like BioShock: Infinite, Tomb Raider, Gears of War: Judgement, and God of War: Ascension during the same month). Still, games are still selling strong, and this month, Titanfall pretty much dominated game sales, defeating its main opponent, the PS4 exclusive inFamous: Second Son.
Here’s the full list of the top 10 best selling games in March 2014:
- Titanfall (XBO, PC) – Electronic Arts
- inFAMOUS Second Son (PS4) – Sony
- South Park: The Stick Of Truth (360, PS3, PC) – Ubisoft
- Call Of Duty: Ghosts (360, PS4, PS3, XBO, NWU, PC) – Activision Blizzard
- Dark Souls II (PS3, 360) – Namco Bandai
- Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (PS4, XBO, PS3, 360) – Konami
- NBA 2K14 (360, PS4, PS3, XBO, PC) – Take 2 Interactive
- Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster (PS3, PSV) – Square Enix
- The LEGO Movie Videogame (360, PS3, 3DS, NWU, XBO, PS4, PSV) – Warner Bros.
- Minecraft (360) | Microsoft
While not an entirely surprising result (after all, Titanfall was basically free with an Xbox One purchase), it’s worth mentioning that Titanfall had a significant advantage over inFamous: Second Son, due to the fact that it was released for two major platforms (Xbox One and PC), as opposed to the PS4 exclusive title. Thus, the comparison might not be entirely fair. Call of Duty: Ghosts is still doing well, so if you were hoping Activision would focus on quality in the future instead of money grabs, well…you might be disappointed.
Dark Souls 2 did exceedingly well, and so did Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes, despite coming with an extremely short campaign and seeing a launch shrouded by negativity and fan disappointment. Diablo 3’s anticipated expansion, Reaper of Souls unfortunately did not make the top 10, but the expansion actually was the best selling title of the month on the PC. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag didn’t make the top 10 list anymore, but the two sequels (Assassin’s Creed 5: Comet and Assassin’s Creed 5: Unity) will most likely make up for it towards the end of the year.
