The struggling Nintendo Wii U is in desperate need of system-selling games. Though the console already has some worthwhile titles (Super Mario 3D World and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, for example) it is still lagging behind Xbox One and PS4 in terms of sales. Hopefully, for Nintendo, Mario Kart 8 will be the game that narrows the gap.
Nintendo UK has announced three Mario Kart Wii U bundles for Europe. The premium bundle will include a physical copy of the game and the Wii U console. The other two bundles will be Mario and Luigi themed, each containing Mario or Luigi hats, a Mario Kart 8 game guide, a copy of the game, and specially designed Wii Remotes, Wii U Gamepad protectors, and Wii U Wheels. The premium bundle will cost £249.99, and the other two bundles will cost £299.99. Both the Mario and Luigi themed bundles are exclusive to the Nintendo UK Online Store.
There is no word on whether any of these bundles will come to North America, though Nintendo would be wise to release these bundles everywhere. The only way Nintendo is going to get the Wii U back on track is if it delivers high-quality first party games; no one is going to buy a Wii U for games like Watch Dogs and Call of Duty. The good news is: Mario Kart 8 looks excellent, and Wii U owners have a quality game to look forward to.
Mario Kart 8 releases on May 30.
